I moved all the way to Daytona Beach, Florida from Hazleton. Although I don't think I've ever used the word "henna" I couldn't possibly count the many times I've heard it used. The people down here say I have a "Northern Accent" (Of course, I don't think I do - but they sure do have Southern accents!!)... and just forget about finding Halupki, pirohi, potato cakes or a "coal bin" in a "cellar" anywhere within an 800 mile radius. Good ol' Home Sweet Home!(henna?):-) I just may order your book in the future. Youze guys sure did do a great job on dis here website. Good luck in da future. :-) Noel |

We and my husband's parents were walking through the Schuylkill Valley Mall in Frackville shortly before Christmas. Santa was approaching and my son was hiding behind me (he's a bit afraid of Santa). Santa walked on by, but as he did he said, "HO, HO, HO!!! How youze doin'?" I had to laugh because our family owns a campground and a lot of our campers come from the Schuylkill County area (as well as Shamokin, which is also the coal region). I thought you would enjoy the story. |

Name: John Blase Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Cedar Rapids, Iowa Time: 1997-12-23 20:56:00 Comments: John Blase Formerly from 306 W. Preston Ave Girardville, PA Age 50 raised in Girardville My sister (are lady) who now lives near Doylestown sent me a copy of Coal Speak and believe me, truer words were never written. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. When I first moved from the region to New York City more than thirty years ago people there were'nt exactly sure how to place my accent and usage. Most thought I had some connection with Ireland. Not entirely a big surprize considring the strong brogue like accent that was clearly (as I found out later) 19th century peasant Irish accented English but with a usage that was not exactly the same. I attribute this to various influences from a variety of ethnic groups that migrated to area after the potato famines. I was often asked if I was Irish by native New Yorkers and since I was not of that ethnic background, I would naturally answer no with something of a surprized tone in my voice. The modern day Irish that I had the pleasure to meet in those days recognized the accent but not all of the usage. Over the years I've lost most of the usage and most of the accent. Although last year I was in Colombia on business and a representative from the General Electric Company; a woman from Dublin, and I had a conversation over some fine South American wine one evening and after the effects of that good vintage had full effect she said she noticed an accent that had a remarkable likeness to that of the country people from the west of Ireland. Well I guess after the alcohol dropped my defenses I must have reverted somewhat, so I recounted my long story about the region's influences on my (to say the least) interesting childhood. I think my transformation from the time I first left to what I am today (culturally speaking) would make fascinating reading because believe me I had; as I'm sure many others have had, very interesting experiences when that unique coal region culture came up against the wider world. Well that's enough for now, I'll keep in touch. Youz guys do da same. John Blase |

Name: Anne Marie Hules Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Huntingtown, MD Time: 1997-12-20 21:06:00 Comments: This is a wonderful web site. It has brought back so many memories!! My husband and I now live in Southern Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay but we are natives of the coal region. I am from Hazleton and graduated in 1976 from Hazleton High School. My maiden name is Paranac. My husband is from the Wilkes Barre area and graduated from the Lake Lehman High School in 1973. We take a bit of the coal region with us wherever we go. My husband still says he is "goin upda aka-me" when he is going to the grocery store and I still call scarves "babushkas". Another word for your dictionary is "pitz" which is a colloquialism unique to Hazleton, I believe. "pitz"= pizza. Here is an example of "pitz" used in a sentance: , "Do yooz wanta go up to Senapes for some pitz".? |
