Name: Nancy Maley/Dave Penkunas Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Mount Joy Pa orig. St. Clair Pa class of '61 Time: 2000-01-31 22:33:37 Comments: HI, Being a novice with the computer I replied to some of the messages, however, not sure if they went where they should....Oh well, tried my best. Dave and I graduated from St. Clair in 1961-went our separate ways and found each other again--32 years later we have 3 grown children, all left the nest to persue careers as did we, and live in Mount Joy Pa-1/2 hour from Hershey and close to Lancaster and Harrisburg. Truly enjoyed the walk in memory lane via your web site---I think the older you get the more you appreciate the special memories that made us the people we are today. Still have a few relatives back home----always feel welcome when we return and am grateful for growing up in an envirement of friendly people and learning that no matter where we venture in life---family and people are most important. All the money in the world can't replace the special feeling of belonging-----granted, things are not the same and the town has seen hard times, but the people remain the same. Thanks for the memories............. Nancy & Dave |

Still would like to hear about Thomas (Lefty) Zimmerman from 509 West Cherry Street around 1950. Also any of the girls that would have been in the class that moved away such as RoseMary Conroy, Agnes Dunn (Maiden names). Someone out there help out. At 28 years old and living in the Cleveland-OH reagion, the Ne Ohio area doesn't hold a candle to the ethnic flavor that the good ol' coal region has. I return often to visit and since my parents (Stan and Barb Olshefski) are moving back to Mt. Carmel in the spring I'm sure to frequent the Son's of Poland in Mt. Carmel. Keep up the great work. In 1998 St John the Baptist parish in Front Royal, Va., built a new church. Some of the furnishings came from St Joseph's and St Peter churches in Mt Carmel. The white marble statue of Our Lady of Victory and St Joseph are there. The cruxifix which hung over the main altar in St Peters for over 100 years now hangs in St Johns. The stained glass windows have been hung in the new church. The people in Front Royal love them almost as much as the people from Mt Carmel. If you are ever in the Shenandoah Valley near Front Royal, stop in. |

(pop pop died from black lung along time ago). The one thing i have been searching for is pictures of the Woodward breaker site that was located in edwardsville, pa. At this time I work in one of the remaining structures which is now a machine shop,,,it has been a machine shop since the mid 60's. When the mines owned it it was used to repair the narrow gauge rail equiptment that was used underground and on the surface of the mining site. I have looked alot to find pictures of what the entier complex looked liked when it was in full opperation but came up with nothing... Do pictures exist of this complex in its hayday????? Joe |

Both of the grandfathers on their mothers side worked in the mines around Hazleton, Pa. Two locations I have heard are Slackersville and Sawmill. Alexander Hanusick contracted "Black Lung" and relocated to Bridgeport, Ct. while George Yuda was killed in the mines. I would be happy to hear from anyone with information about any of these names or places. This will be a daunting task because of the advent of WWII on the Eastern European Countries. Though he was born in the US, Alexander spent his boyhood in Europe before returning to the US. I believe one or the other families lived in Macadoo, Pa. Thanks for any info you may have or can direct me to. |

Name: Jack Phillips Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Gilberton Time: 2000-01-08 15:41:13 Comments: Escaped from Gilberton with the HS Class of 49 but never got the coal dust out of my shoes nor broke the "Ying" habit. It's wonderful to see someone document our coal region "peccadilloes"which seem to come out of my mouth at the most inappropiate times. Bravo to youse! See what I mean? Thanks for a great trip into the past. I'm sure my memories of growing up during the Coal Region Glory Days are beautifully distorted beyond the realities of those times---but it was GREAT!! Researching the Phillips from Gilberton and the Zacks fron shendo. Any clues would be appreciated. |

Graduated MAHS in '76- great times. Would be great to hear from the gang that hung out at 12th Street School in the late 60's thru middle 70's. By the way, a couple of great bar's that were omitted from the list were Berdosh's (Lil's) and Garze's (Previously Peca's and now Rut's). |

Name: Robert James Namiot Website: Referred by: Geocities From: Minersville, Pa. Time: 2000-01-02 17:25:45 Comments: I left the Coal region 27 years ago when I joined the Navy. I now live just west of Fredericksburg, Virginia in Spotsylvania County in an area called Battlefield Green. My parents and grandparents all lived in and around Minersville and my mother, now 87, still lives on Lytle St. in New Minersville, where I grew up. I get home fairly often to visit my mom ( twice in two weeks this Christmas) and its kind of sad to see how the places I knew as a kid have changed so much. I understand how the economy is responsible for all these changes, but I guess everyone would like their childhood memories to stay the same. But, there are still many places back home that have not changed, and all I have to do is imagine it is still 1959.......and it is! This is a great site, and I'm going to tell my brother about is as soon as I go off line. Keep up the good work and Happy Millenium! Bob Namiot |
