I remember the hills around Minersville...I roamed them as a kid..........remember "pig alley", the long haul up the steps to get to St. Stanislaus church....Lost contact with most of my friends when my family moved to Reading. Hey, Joe Brennan, Joe Bradly, John Yastishock "Yasti", Carol Adukinas.......John Roscoe from Cass Township....anyone of you still in that area? Remember the Polish Day times at Marlin. I now reside in Dayton,Ohio.YES,I still have that coal region accent. Guess one never looses it. Now that I found this site I'll be here often. |

LOL I am doing some familiy research on my dad's family SOMERDAY from Shamokin (orginally called SAMERDAK). John Somerday and Helen (Skinkus). They had 9 kids: Joseph, Mary, Rita, Leona, Sylvia, Helen (Honey), Jerome (Jerry), Sam, and Gene (my dad). If anyone has ANY information about this family I would greatly apprieciate it - even if it is "hey, he still owes me $20!" Although there are only 3 of the 9 left I know how to get in touch with them. Thanks in advance for any help. If it proves good, I may just buy you a quart! |

Name: GT Stoddard Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Ventnor, NJ formerly Minersville Time: 2000-02-22 19:33:22 Comments: I just checked out Schuylkill Online and learned of the death of Pottsville's Mayor Terry Reiley. Terry was a true Schuylkill Countian, his pride in his hometown and county were only over-matched by his love of family and friends. I remember asking Terry to join us as a celebrity bartender, at Rumors, for a Half Way to St Patrick's Day Promotion. He showed up dressed all in green, urging people to spend money and tip even more, (all the money raised went to a local charity)he single-handedly made the event a huge success because he convinced people it was ST PATTY'S DAY.... I never had the heart to tell him that it was September 17 NOT March 17. Terry; all of NEPA lost a leader and a friend--you'll never be forgotten. P.S.-I'll "have one" in your honor on St Patty's Day. God Bless Terry's parents, his wife & children, his brother and his countless number of friends. |

Name: Jean Yavis Jones Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: University Park, Md. Time: 2000-02-11 14:39:34 Comments: St. Patrick's grade school; NBVM (Class of 65). Very fond memories of Pottsville and environs. Lots of family history there - Yavis, Gilmartin, Nevils. Anyone recall the Alco Restaurant (before my time) or Dimmerlings on 18th & Market (my first banana split and milk shake). How about the great pizza and subs at Charlies Pizza - is it still there? Across from there was an old man in a little shack who did shoe repairs - he was very skilled - and always nice to the little girl who brought in her father's shoes for repair (wish I could remember his name!) And,of course, there was Mickey's up on the East Side - all of Nativity and much of Pottsville High spent Friday and Sat. nights there. Then, too there was dancing and swimming at Deer Lake - the dances at the Globe and summer swimming every day at Minersville pool in Minersville. How about the NBVM foot ball team in those days - league championship in 1961-2, I think- pretty good baseketball teams, too. Anyone remember the Sesquicentennial???? I remember my dad wearing a mustache for the first (and only) time in his life (in accordance with a town ordinance) and his marching in a parade. He marched in July 4th parades for a while in his Army airforce uniform, too. July 4th - gosh that was the best day of the year. First the parade, then the VFW or CWV picnics - swimming, playing, and then home to change and go to the Pageant and fabulous fireworks at Pottsville High Stadium. Still the best fireworks I ever remember. I've never seen anything like it anywhere else- including Washington D.C. Wish everyone could have grown up in Pottsville when I did - and I wish the town leaders of the past would have had enough foresight to see what would happen to my hometown if they didn't do something (and they didn't) to compensate for the loss of coal as the primary industry - so that more folks could live and work there now. Jean Yavis Jones formerly of 1918 W. Norwegian St. (down the street from the Yorkville Hose House.) |

Name: James Peters Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Odenton, MD (by way of Reinerton, PA) Time: 2000-02-07 20:00:43 Comments: My father who died last year from cancer had black lung from his days as a miner. He and a friend picked coal, and he later signed on as a "dynamiter" with several different coal operations in Hegins area. I guess this makes me a "Coal Miner's Son". I have inherited so many good stories about not so good times, and if I can ever get the lump out of my throat when I think about my Dad, I'll sit down and send you some of them. I graduated from college with a minor in English, and have lost the majority of my slang and colloquialisms (still can't spell that word!), but his stories live on in my heart. We are "dutchies" and some of the references to halupkies and polish sausage etc. bring back memories of home recipes from my grandparents who were from Mount Carmel, and I can actually make halupkies (a.k.a. "galumpkies" and "blind pigeons"), and even pierogies (by hand, not crackng a box!). Still, all in all a very good representation that I'm sure even my father would enjoy, god rest his soul. Tanks, and youz guys dun a good job! |

Anyone out there who might know anyone from that class would be a big help if you would tell them to get off their lazy butt and respond to Audrey's letter. I know most of you are in your 60's now but that's no excuse for not coming to the reunion. After all this may be the last one for some of us. Hey let the good times roll. |

Name: Frank Quinn Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Las Vegas Time: 2000-02-05 02:42:36 Comments: Noticed all the people calling themselves "coalcrackers" which is all right. However, how many have actually cracked coal? I have and my brothers. If I had a dollar for every lump of coal we picked from the banks, cracked, screened, and wheelborrowed to the cellar, I'd be one very damn rich man. It was something I wouldn't wish on anyone but it had to be done because of the economic hard times. Anyway, we all survived but I'm sure there is a little dust in the lungs somewhere. True Coalcracker |

I grew up in a coal mining town, listening to my grandfather and father telling me coal mining stories. I also played amongst the Glen Lyon Breaker, Colliery, and Scale House. I feel privilaged to be able to do so. Everything is gone now. All the mines and air shafts filled in. Not even a trace of anything. I can only now tell my children of the great things which once stood in such a great place and tell them the stories I remember as a child. |
