Comments: Been to this site numerous times and laugh out loud every time. I'm originally from Tamaqua, Class of '71. Remember Greasy Pete's; sledding down Snake Hill; ice skating on the Schuylkill River, the Municipal Parking Lot, and at Kellners damn; the coal banks, crawling thru the pipe at the Dutch Hill Park and playing basketball at the "Sal". Great site. My parents recently moved back to Tamaqua after being gone for twenty years.

I can see that a lot of work went into your site. Some of the pictures bring back great memories. One of the best is what you call "bleenies". We called them "Platski" when I was a child. It makes my mouth water to think of them. My New England wife has learned to make them for me on special occasions. Thanks for some great nostalgia Fran Seddon PS Check out my site.

Comments: My dad and possibly my grandfather were coal miners in this region in the 1940's. My father's name was Norman Auburn Purks. He's buried at Mount Carmel and died of black lung. I'm really glad that I found this website. I enjoy reading the folklore and visited the community only once in the early 1950's but was really small and don't remember much. But I plan on revisiting the area in late spring. Our family's from Fredricksburg, VA but I was raised in Ohio. But now I know where my dialect comes from and I have sayings that come straight out of the coal regions. I never got to know any of Pop's family and friends but if anybody knows or has any information I would appreciate the info. Thank you!

Comments: Nice web page! While not a full coal cracker, my pop is from Nanticoke (Honey Pot section)and all his family still lives up there. I can remember going to the 'beer gardens' with my uncles when I was little. All my uncles worked in the mines and my pop's pop was killed in a mine cave in more then 50 years ago. Really enjoyed the best pizza and the mention of Stokey's Bar-b-que. Do you have anything on Pete Gray? He is slowly being forgotten as is the memories of the coal region.

Comments: I never lived in the coal region, but the pages make me homesick for my father, who died there in 1990. My father was born in Shenandoah in 1908, was raised in Girardville, worked at the Hammond Colliery and left the coal region for the NYC area in 1929. He lived in New Jersey and NYC (where he met and married my mother and they produced my sister & myself) until 1971, when he retired and moved back, first to Shenandoah and then, in 1981, to Mahanoy City. My son is interested in doing some family research. My father was Nicholas Brennan, but was raised by cousins as Nelson Connors. He was the youngest son of another Nicholas Brennan, (from Hecksherville, a Civil War veteran) and Mary Rice Brennan. We have a VERY long generation stretch since the elder Nicholas was born over 110 years before I was. I met a cousin, in 1981(?) who was visiting my father to get some information for research that he was doing. His father, James Brennan (who died in 1988 or 89), was a great-grandson of Nicholas Brennan, with his first wife Katherine. We would like to get in touch with him, or any other relatives who can get more information for us. I can be reached at: mickibc@yahoo.com and my son at ltsmass@excite.com. Thanks.

Comments: Shamokin Greyhound, Class of 1961. Dad was a State Trooper assigned to the Shamokin Barracks during the 1950's and of course this gave me the opportunity to live and grow up in Shamokin. What a wonderful experience with great people. Here's a neat story. My high school friend, Herb Pat Lenker, and I reacquainted circumstantially around 1995. Turns out we married the cheerleading captains from the 1962 Upper Dauphin Area cheerleading squad. What a discovery!! Happy birthday Pat -- tomorrow, March 17. Comments: From girardville, class of ' 52. remember picking huckleberries and selling them to Heckerts bakery for money to go to the matinee on saturday afternoon at the moviehouse for 12 cents. Used to walk over the mountain to fountain springs to go fishing behind the Academy. Does anyone remember the live pigeon trap shoots on sundays at the end of town? would be interested in hearing from anyone from girardville that was there in early fifties. i moved to michigan in 1954, still visit there every couple years.

Comments: This is a great site. Anna Mae and I live in Allentown, Pa for the past 30+ years. Its great hearing and reading about so many people that are still interested in the good old Coal Regions.I imagine when we retire in a few years we will move back. In going through the guestbook I have spotted a lot of names that I remember such as: Charlie Bookstein,Frank Kassak, Adam Samelko (from good old Stevens Trade School-It is now Thaddeus Stevens COLLEGE) Ron Seybrecht who is from Stevens. Hey Bill McGlinchey it great seeing you on the list also. Some news about Tamaqua-a local resident just won 16 Million Dollars in the super six lotto last week-February. He is retired at 54 and now I guess he is really retired.Phylis (Jones) Heller from Leesburg, Va. do you have a sister Roseanne. She went to St Jerome's with me until seventh or eighth grade and I would like to know where she is located. Our class would like to find this out (Class of 1959 of Marian High School).Anyone from Marian, Tamaqua or Stevens that remembers my wife (Anna Mae Ugolick) or me drop us a line here at this site or at jamkan@gateway.net or buzz us if you are in Allentown at 610-432-4243 it would be great hearing from you. We just purchased a computer so we are just learning this contraption so writing to all you crackers will help us get some of the wrinkles out. We'll be in touch, McGlinch, say hello to Brenda. I hope she is using that cookbook from this site.

Comments: Hi, I've signed in before but left a few things out. I graduated from WHS in '52 (thats'1952!!). That year we won the "Twin Valley" champonship in football. Among the teams we beat were,Porter Township,Gilberton,Cressonia, and more including Millersburg. The reason I say this is; that after 48 years, whenI go 'home ' they still talk about that season like it was last week. Accumlitive small town memory is amazing, "Patches" didn't know were Williamstown is located,no superise. I joined the Navy in '54 and retired in '78. Had three kids, got divorced and now living contentedly alone, still working full time. It would be nice to hear from 'regional' folks. Jim (Slugger ) Allen jallen2257@aol.com

Comments: Found your page while looking for information on Northeastern Pennsylvania/Marvin Coal Company. My grandfather, Rosario Castellano, worked there. I took a tour of a mine in Scranton a couple of years back--what a life. My other grandfather worked in a mine also--though I don't know which one. You have to have great respect for these men and boys.

Comments: I realy enjoyed this site, It has realy brought back memmories. I realy loved the recipes, and the pictures I have not yet finished look, or browsing , but I promis I will finish looking at everything. I think this would be a good learning site for someone who would love to learn about the coal region, and how hard things were back then and how hard it was for the miners who risk there lives everyday to go into the mines for coal, so people could be warm. Like I said in the begining It has realy brought back memmories. P.S. I will try some of the recipes especialy the one that I have never had as of yet. They all sound very good. MUST TRY I am sure they are delisious. Don.

Comments: For those wanting to check out 'patch towns' go see the URL above for links to USGS derived topographic maps existing at my map WWW pages. I just got finished using the DeLorme 'TopoUSA' mapping software to create several views of the McAdoo/Hazleton area; Also Shenandoah, Pottsville, and Shamokin/Mt Carmel areas. Will create others, as time permits. This really good mapping software allows creation of '3D' terrain views, one of which see for Spring Mountain (McAdoo), at its own link. Main homepage is http://www.erols.com/sfpayer.
