Comments: Mother and father were born in Frackville. Moved to south Jersey for work in the 40's, that's where I was born. My grand parents lived in "da foot" and I have a lot of great memories as a young child playing in the slate piles and picking huckle berries? Anyone remember the name Paleschic? Relatives in Mt Carmel.

There was one thing she always said that wasn't on the list. She would tell us to "wrench the dishes". This brought back a lot of memories.

Comments: Hi There! I love this site. Both of my parents are from Scranton. My father Tom McAllister went to St. Ann's in the 50's and my mother Grace (McAloon) went to St. Pat's; also in the 50's. My mother's family, the Burkes (on my grandmother’s side) had a family farm in the Scranton area. I would love to hear any information about my family if anyone knows them. Also, I heard my aunts talk about THE PINES all the time. I would love to get some history on it. From what I gather, it was kind of a holding area for new immigrants. My mother's family, the Burke's, were from Switzerland and when they arrived in the US they landed in the area known as THE PINES. I've been told that originally the homes were like townhouses that had big stoves outside that were shared by the neighboring families. Is this true? Any information would great!!! Oh yeah I love the dictionary. I laughed so hard when I saw a buck two-eighty! My uncle used to say that all the time.

Comments: I was the youngest of eight in the small villiage (or patch as I've learned from your site) of Lofty. I found this site while continuing my geneaological research and was thrilled that it said so much of the blue-collar culture the pervades my family and loved the tongue-and-cheek tone of the site. I would like to see some more info on holiday tradition in this region, especially with regard to Easter dinner. St. Mary's in Hazleton has a site that's fairly specific on Byzantine Catholic Tradition. Also, could you post any documents that chronicle the region's history???

Anyone remember MOC dances and the big clock at 3rd & Oak St., football games at the end of town, Langis's, the Pine Burr, the big chandelier at the Victoria Theatre, CMP's & VMP's at Maurer's Dairy, Block parties, the smell of roasted chestnuts and peanuts on Oak St. on a winter day, Sat. evenings in town, the Viaduct, church bells, the Mt. Carmel brewery whistle, the 9:00 p.m. fire co. whistle, picking huckleberries along the mountain, and so many more wonderful memories ........................

Comments: I grew up in Pottsville, PA. My mom, Dolores Jones, still lives there, up on Greenwood Hill. My dad, Bob Jones, was a barber in downtown Pottsville for almost 40 years. He died in 1995. My mom and dad both grew up in Mt. Carmel. I graduated from PAHS (go Crimson Tide!) in '72 along with my twin sister Ann. My sister married another PAHS graduate, Bob Fry, (’71) who then graduated from Penn State. They settled in New Jersey. My brother, Bob Jones, graduated in '71 and also went on to Penn State. He now lives in Atlanta. Some of my favorite memories of the coal region include Knoebel's Grove. No theme park compares! And what about Roadside America, the Farmer's Market in Schuylkill Haven, the Pioneer Tunnel in Ashland, Hawk Mountain, and Heisler's Dairy (and putt putt)? My kids drink Guers chocolate milk and iced tea whenever we visit. I went to High School with Eddie Guers. His family lived a street away. My kids also love to visit Mootz' Candy store in downtown Pottsville. I worked at the Sugar Bowl (no longer there) after school. My husband (a North Carolinian) loves the Yuengling Brewery tour. I spent years going to St. Pat's, feeling nauseated because in those days we had to fast for communion from midnight on. The nausea increased when passing by the brewery next door on the way into church. Hops! Yuck!

Comments: Great Web Site. I am researching my Family Tree and through email have found cousins I didn't know I had. One of those cousins sent me the info about this site. I was born in Strong (Green Ridge), in Northumberland County, between Mt. Carmel & Kulpmont. My family moved to Cleve., OH when I was about 7 yrs. old. My grandparents lived in Gowen City for a number of years and then moved to Natalie. My sister, brother and I (along with their spouses) try to visit every couple of years. You know the saying, "You can take the girl out of the Coal Region, but she will still have coal dust in her viens!".

His name was Frank Ross,or Digeseppi or DiJoseph, depending on who's telling the story. Don't know much more than that except that he also promoted boxing matches. My mother's father was a foreman in the coal mines until they closed in the 1950's. My father's father worked in the coal mines only when his business was slow. He was a handyman. He built the steep stairs at the top of Gardner St in Plymouth. He died in 1963 at the age of 85. As far as I know, those steps are still in use.

Comments: My mothers family was from Centralia (McNelis'). I spent a lot of time (summers & holidays) "up state". We hung out at "Bill's", across from the post office and later "The Hop" on the corner. My cousin Peggy lives in Ashland now. If any of this sounds familiar, drop me line.

Comments: What a great site. I have been away for thirty years and am now relocating to the greater Philadelphia area. My one regret growing up in Wanamie is that I did not take many pictures of the coal breakers and narrow gauge Lokies. Your site brings back many found memories.

Comments: This site is great. I lived in Mahanoy City and Barnesville before moving to Georgia as a teenager. What a culture shock and language barrier!!! I didn't understand the southern accent and teachers could not understand me. I have great childhood memories of Lakewood Park. To bad it's gone. I miss the pizza. I would love to hear from the Mahanoy High class of 1980. Is there a 20 yr reunion planned? My husband, a true southerner, doesn't get this stuff. This page made me laugh and laugh. I'll visit again. Old Mahanoy City/Barnesville pals please email me lyncoombe@aol.com I'd love to hear from old friends.

Comments: I am now retired and live near Dillsburg,PA. My parents John and Mary moved the family to Harrisburg in '42 so I was quite young at the time. Have been back many times, as I was a photo-journalist for the Patriot News,Harrisburg and then for The Catholic Witness. My early retirement was forced by kidney failure. Had a kidney transplant at John's Hopkins St.Patricks' day '98. I am doing very well. Always enjoyed the people from the "region" (Mt.Carmel, Danville, Shamokin, Bloomsburg, Trevorton, and all the way north to Berwick) They got to be some of the best people on the face of this old earth. I was taught a great work ethic as a lot of people from the region have. Anyone who might stumble on this and remembers me or the family please drop an e-mail.

Comments: I grew up in Shamokin and miss the peace and quiet of those days.... when excitement meant going to a Shamokin football game and hearing the band play "Man of La Mancha." We could walk to Martini's Market or Malick's on 8th Street to get candy or popsicles. Do you remember the smell of the old Lincoln School, with chalk and floor polish and wet boots in the cloakrooms? Do you remember the black shoes that all the little old maid teachers wore in those days? Remember the smell of the Coney if you walked past on a cold winter evening? I wish we had taken more pride in our treasures and our heritage...the Kulp mansion, the McConnell mansion, Edgewood Park....the stories of the old miners. Sometimes I wish we could go home again, and have a bittersweet ice cream cone at Martz's. Those days won't come again.

Comments: My father grew up in Coaldale, PA, and many of my relatives still live in the region. My grandfather worked in the coalmines and died from black lung before my parents were married. I love my relatives in PA, and think they are among the best people in the world. I love to visit but don't get to often enough!!

Comments: Originally from Tamaqua, PA. Lived next to the Italian Club all my life until I left for college. Sleigh rided into my husband's heart in '78 off the mountain on Mountain Avenue (but the sleigh ridin' was definitely better on Snake Hill). Someone forgot ROMA PIZZA on Broad Street in TAMAQUA as one of the best pizza places! Also forgot Bare Ass Beach between Tamaqua and Tuscarora as one of the best swimming holes -- TAHS Class of 85 enjoyed the summer before our sr. year there! Hometown Fire Co was a good bar for awhile while I was in college...YIPES! DH and I have lots of family still dere! My dad was Bobby, my half brothers are Bobby Jr, Daniel, Bill, Glen, Larry and Lenny. Lots of cuzins(yes I know how to spell :) ), nieces and nephews too! DH mom (MIL) is Lois Dougherty, Doc's (Tom Dougherty's) sister. I really miss the times at the "CABIN", playin' duck sh*t at the "land" (jeez, Cory lives there now !!!????!!!) and barrells at the power lines! However, I must admit, I did not attend a "bush" party until I went to college at The 'Ville....now that's another story---Amish Country!! Luv yous all! Laur
