Discovering your website has been a great pleasure for me. Just the place names, the food names, bring back memories. My wife thinks NE Pa. is a pretty strange place, and she gets a great kick out your coalspeak lexicon. Thanks very much for "honoring" a region that really remains unappreciated. I never thought I'd find my neighborhood bar, Tiny's Manhole, listed on the web. Great work! Bob Spencer |

The greatest heroes I have are my grandfathers who toiled in the mines to build a life for their families. This website is great. It is a reminder to me how much this region is a part of my heart and soul. Keep up the good work. |

I was born in Coaldale and spent parts of the summer months with my grammy (Francis Kalinak). This site was a real tear-jerker for me, but it brought back some wonderful memories. I remember the summers at my grammy's on Water Street in Coaldale and hiking up the cobblestone roads to St. Cyril's for church on Sunday. She lived next door to Soberick's. I remember seeing the Sound of Music at the Angela, family parties at the pool, church block parties, the old school building next to my dad's parents (John and Ethel Mateyak) who lived on Ruddle Street. I remember sitting on Santa's lap at Christmas up in Bright's. Unfortunately, I also remember the demolition of my grammy's house due to land subsistence into the mines. She had a grand house with a creek and breaker behind it. I remember the train passing and the engineer waving to those of us standing on her back porch. Thanks for the memories! Joan |
