Comments: It was fun to find this web page while actually looking for something else. I grew up in Wiconisco, which is actually in Dauphin County, however, I am a 1987 graduate of Williams Valley High School in Tower City. In 1995 I graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg and have been serving Alpha Parish in Pittsburgh since then. All too often, I find myself having to explain certain words, phrases, and my PA Dutch accent to people here in Pittsburgh. It was nice to find this connection to home.

Comments: Just want to let the webmasters know...You might want to add another name to your famous Coalcrackers section. According to my brother, the actress who plays on "Malcolm in the Middle" is from the Coal Regions--actually, Mount Carmel. Her name is Jane Kazmarek. My brother claims that he went to college at Bloomsburg with her brother and than he told my brother that once she graduated from high school she, Janey, decided to go to California and become an actress. My brother has followed her career. He says she has been in a lot of tv movies and things like that. Now she has been nominated for an "Emmy" for her portrayal of the mother on "Malcom in the Middle." I have never seen the show. Also, she is married to an actor, Bradley Whitford, who portrays "josh" on the "West Wing." You may want to check this out and confirm the information so you could add her name to the Coal Crackers list. Der ya go!!!

Comments: Valley, it warms the cockles of my heart. (I grew up with this phrase). My mom, Mary O'Neill, came to live with me before she passed on. Unfortunately Mom was hospitalized for a couple months when she was with me. Every day when I visited with her in the hospital, I could hear the nurses laughing as Mom told them about the Valley. Many told me that they so enjoyed hearing Mom's storys, and especially enjoyed the Irish lilt in her voice. She talked about the coal crackers (daddy was one), and how they came out of the mines (if they were lucky), how many died. She even talked about the Molly Maguires. (Some of the nurses said they wanted to rent the Sean Connery movie).

Comments: Hi everybody: I grew up in Carbondale, PA. My grandfather, father and all my uncles were coal miners and I loved hearing the stories of thier days in the mines. As a little girl I remember hearing the whistle from the breaker that was so very close to my home. I now live in Davie, Fl, but my family still lives in Carbondale and I go "HOME" as often as possible. I have 7 brothers and sisters and we all graduated from St. Rose School in Carbondale. Carbondale was a wonderful place to grow up!!! This is a great site; thank you!! Katy Andrews

Gorgeous, late August weather enjoyed on the beach.....returning home to watch hapless Penn State get shellacked (by a mediocre team) on National TV!!!!!!! Fear not Lion fans, Toledo is next. That loud noise you just heard is the earliest-ever crashing of the PSU bandwagon. Usually they wait 'til November to fold like a cheap suit. Mathematically and realistically eliminated before Labor Day. Life is good! Go IRISH!!

Comments: I grew up in the town of Coaldale having a father and grandfather that were miners. In 1954 we had to move away because of no more work, although we didn't move too far away my heart was broken, because the feeling I had living there was never equalled. I am now a grandmother but have never forgot the little coal mining town and the people that have left a most wonderful impression on me. This page had given me a boost to all those memories. Thank you so very much.

Comments: Hi - I just read Pete Poplawski's comment. We don't know each other but share something in common, a love of Shamokin. The hill he calls Rocky Point is called Stoney Point by some of us. I played there as a child, flew my kites there and once, damn near burned the side of it playing with matches. For anyone interested, there is room to be "planted" in the Ukrainian Transfiguration Cemetery, just up the hill from the Polish Cemetery. I made a copy of his comment and will show it to the lady at the Coney Island. She'll get a kick out of it. Kove

Today in our local (Gainesville) paper there was a feature about a local brewery that has had a comeback due to the new beer they're carrying - YUENGLINGS! They had a story on the brewery and a photo of it from the 20's! It seems it has gotten quite popular w/ the Univ. of Fla. crowd. Myabe we could get them to start rooting for the Nittany Lions?

Comments: I originally am from Fair Lawn NJ but my Dad is from Shamokin so I grew up on regular visits to Coney Island, Martz's, The Copper Kettle Candy Kitchen, Knoebels Groves, The Fun Shop etc. Shamokin is the coolest. As I got older my friends and I drove out to Shamokin from Jersey because it was the land that time forgot and we partied our asses off on the coal roads. The cemetery behind Rocky Point by the ball field is the quietest place ever you could be stuck in the ground. Too bad there is no more room. I've got the recipe to the Coney Island Chili so send me an e-mail if you want a copy. My Aunt got it from an old employee. Jeez , how old is the woman who works there? She looked the same when I went there 30 years ago. The onions in the air must be a preservative. Am I a die hard? My office in Pompano Beach Florida has a signed framed original lithogrpah from M.T. Zyla of the F & S Brewery!!! What a conversation piece.

I graduated from Cass Township High, class of 1961. I left Buck Run shortly after graduation and headed to New York City where I began working for American Airlines.I am now retired from American after 35 years of service. I return to PA frequently to visit my mother and other relatives. Though my mother now lives in Jonestown, outside of Minersville,I make a trip to Buck Run each time I visit. Although physically I am not in PA...my heart will always be there.Future plans include moving back to PA.

I hail from QUAKAKE, did you know that once you crossed the railroad tracks heading toward Delano, that section of Quakake was or maybe still is known as Ground Hog Hollow! I was suprised that Hometown wasn't on the list of Towns and Patches. Anyone remember the Johnson Ice Cream Stand in South Tamaqua, or roller skating parties at Lakewood Park, how about the Cascades in Hometown? The Palma Maria had the BEST hoagies and pizza, Texas Lunch in Tamaqua the best hamburgers, what was the sauce they put on them anyhow? Plus think about this the Texas Lunch didn't have bathroom facilities. Didja ever wonder about that? I graduated in 1960 from MAHS. Last years reunion for MTHS alumni was great, suprised not to read any messages concerning the big event. Thanks to all the people who planned the reunion! I can't imagine all the work it took to plan such an event. It was a great success thanks again. There is something about the coal region that keeps calling people back. We're heading upstate next week to the Benton area, then to Mahanoy City, Quakake. My husband (born and raised in NJ) wants to retire upstate. I don't know if he realizes what the weather in the winter is really like! Doya think he's in for a big suprise? Will bookmark the site. Keep up the great work, when I get homesick I'll be sure to visit this website. Thanks! Kay (Peiser) Jones

Comments: I was born in Pottsville back in '47' and make it back about once a year. I lived in Minersville for about 3 years and moved to Middletown. I am researching family: George B Scott, Yarnall[Yarnell], Sponsoler[Sponseler], Dando, Soloman [Solomon] Jenkins. I know that the Yarnall family is the oldest going to William Penn arrival. But cannot make direct links. Loved your site. My wife finally understands where my parents language came from.

Comments: I have really enjoyed viewing your web site. My grandfather was a coal miner in Chester, Pa. My mother and several of her brothers and sisters were born there also. I really liked the Top Ten Lists and Coal Crackers, they sure do bring back alot of the old memories and sayings, that to this day I find myself saying several times a day. Thank you again all of the memories that have returned to me.

Comments: Enjoy the web site. Husband and I are from St. Clair, graduated in "61. Dave's Dad (Joe) had Penn's Garage on Caroline St. in St. Clair and my Dad, Francis (Sprigger) Maley worked at the St. Clair coal company as a carpenter. My Uncle, Tom Brown, was the ice man in St. Clair for years-------anyone remember? Also, was wondering if anyone knew my Grandfather, Oscar Masser, he worked at Raudenbushes bakery for years in Frackville. He was married to Emma Richards Masser and they lived above a bar in Frackville, at the end of town when leaving Frackville. Keep up the good work!

Comments: Hi...Lived in Wilkes Barre in the late 40's, Shavertown in the early 50's and Schuylkill Haven late 50's. Went to Westmoreland High School in Trucksville for 5 years and have lots of fond memories of it. Graduated from Sch. Haven in 55. Played on the 54 football team which was one of Coach Stauffers greatest. He never let the first team play long and never ran up the score, and he could have. Great guy. It is funny because just yesterday I was telling a friend about the jargon of the reejon; calling the father "the old lad" and the son "the young lad", and the habit of calling people "Butt". He laughed and maybe thought I was making it up. Wait till I show him this page. I have a fond memory of dancing an Irish jig with Mrs Dorsey while Jimmy and Tommy were playing at Barnsville in 1955. Jimmy and Tommy passed away shortly after that. We now can get Tastycakes here in Florida, but pizza and cheese steaks are nowhere near the mouth watering goodness of the reejon! And rumour has it that Yeunglings just bought the old Miller Brewery here in Tampa! I am not a beer drinker, but someday when I get in a nostalgic mood, I will hoist a cold one for old times sake....ah those nurses at the Pottsville VFW, or the Spot and the Globe...I long for a sub from Stramara's or a Coney Island hot dog! The Sunday dances in New Philly! Renningers market in Orwigsburg. (We have a Renningers market here in Florida, owned by the same family) The skinney dip sessions at the quarry near Orwigsburg, or parking at the Tumbling Run dam! What red blooded high schooler did not go "chasin parkers" at the dam? In your list of famous reejon people there are many, many more......One in particular you missed was a newspaper writer named Walter Farqhuar. He wrote sports for the Republican well into his nineties. I remember him sitting on the bench with me during a baseball game in Pottsville telling me stories of his bosum buddy, John Ohara, who at one time wrote for the Republican I believe. Walter was one of the great writers of his time. Thanks for the Nostalgia trip. I'll visit often.

Comments: I was born and raised in Hazleton, where I still have close relatives. I moved away from the region late 1969, and came to South Florida, where I did Police work for 28 years, retired and started a second career with a major ocean freight carrier as the Director of Security. We have 31 vessels that call on 68 different ports throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America. I miss the friendliness of the people living in the coal region, picking wild huckleberries, teaberries, mushrooms and the various ethnic foods, but NOT the snow and bitter cold.
