Comments: Hubby and I both from Pottsville(me-NBVM 83,him-PAHS 84). Been down here for 5 years and these damn rednecks STILL make fun of the way WE talk. Thanks to CoalSpeak, I can prove to my buds at work that people from Chendo really do say "462 da-F**k" at the end of each sentence. Our families know that they can't stay with us (when they come to see "Mickey Mouse") unless they bring the following items: Chesterfield Ale,Guers Ice Tea, Ring Bologna, Costas-York Club Sandwiches, Frozen Pottsville Pizzera Pizza(it travels nicely and it's soooo damn good!), Wixons Shoo Fly Pie, One-pound box of Mootz's Peanut Rolls(that reminds me-those Costas-York Jackpots are good, too), and Miller's Hot Bologna. (I guess I shooda ate supper before I wrote this!) I would like to personally thank Dick Yuengling for buying the old beer plant in Tampa, because now we Coal Crackers in Central FL. can buy Ying on TAP!(yo,Dick.Let me know if you need any taste testers, my old man would be more than happy to oblige.) It's taken about a week, but I finally scanned through all the comments and I didn't see a whole lot from Potts, most are from "up the line". Well, it's still an awesome website and I'll be hitting it whenever I get homesick or just dyin' to see a picture of a bleenie.

Comments: We are Joni and Bobby Kitsock from da Foot (Mahanoy Plane, of course)and we just came from "over the back" and thought we'd check out this cool, hard coal site (i.e. Anthracite). Okay, it was a bad pun, but we're drinking Black and Tan, so give us a break. Anyway, we're down here living the good life in Hershey, PA, with friends from Shendo (Could you believe a Golden Bear befriending a Blue Devil---actually, it was at a wedding after a fight when the last half kicked and there was this girl--but that's another story.). . . and, anyway, we thought we'd say hello.

Comments: Wonderful sight. I grew up in Nanticoke and left in 1985. This sight brought back some great memories. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Also another trip worth taking is a book entitled "... you know you're from the Valley" by W. Lee Woodmansee. I called Tudor Book Store in Kingston and had them ship it to me. I highly recommend it. It has alot of the Valleyisms in it. One is, If you ever went trick or treating in a bar, you're from the Valley. Thanks again.

Comments: What fun! I'm a proud, native NORTHERN Idahoan (for you Easterners, remember--there's a HUGE difference between the topography, culture and quality of life of North Idaho vs. South Idaho!) and I truly enjoyed the Coal Region website! The lives of "Coal Crackers," in many ways, mirror those of rural (and most of us ARE rural!) Pacific Northwest "stump jumpers." The colorful, regional "language" is a hoot! By the way, when a dyed-in-the-flannel Idaho logger walks up to you and says "Aye, I need a bull prick!", "My son's a hooker now. Got tired of workin' as a gyppo," or "My cable has a cunt splice" don't be shocked or offended. Just smile and offer him a warm spot by the barrel, a chewasnoose and a cold Animal Beer!

Anyway, I am 100% Irish and also 100% coal region. My whole family comes from here and so my family tradition continues. So if there are any other McGinley's from the Centralia or Locust Gap mold I'd luv to hear from ya cuz I have no idea of who my family around here is. Also any kids my age (I am 15) wanna e- mail me sometime my e mail is listed so give me a buzz sometime espeacially if you are a girl cuz if you're from the coal region and you're a guy, girls are everything.

While her surname may be wonderfully Coal Region-esque, she is actually a native of Milwaukee and until her acting success took off, spent her whole life in Wisconsin. Comments: I was born in Ashland and lived there for a few years, but also lived in Locust Dale & Lavelle. I was just back in town yesterday 17 September 2000 for my cusins baby Christening. I just had to drive around to all the houses that I lived in as a "young lad" as well as the houses of many of my relitives. I also drove my wife to all the parks in Ashland where I use to play and for the most part they really havent changed at all. While at the dinner after the christening, my cousins, cousin told me about this web address and I just had to check it out. It sure brings back the memories. I'll be sending it to my children who are living in Arizonia and South Carolina. When they check out this site and get to the CoalSpeak section, they will understand where I came up with some of the sayings that I use. :) I'll be checking back to this site often as I hope to find or have other friends and relitives that view this and see my name find me. If you read this and know me from those good ole days, please e-mail me. I would love to hear from all. [ chassel@earthlink.net ]

Comments: Spent a lot of time in the coal region in my teens (72-78) My friend's grandmother lived in Frackville and we used to go camping on his other grandparents abandoned property in Lost Creek. During our trips I gained a real love of the people and the area. Nothing like a 7 oz. draft and an order of fried pierogies at Pasky's in Shendo. Looking forward to visiting again soon. I haven't been back for 25 years. I feel very drawn to the area. Perhaps I am a coal cracker, reincarnated. Henna or no?

Comments: originally from camp hill, pa, but had some relatives that lived in nesquehoning, an aunt mary, but i believe she must have been a great or great great aunt, and an uncle joe. spent many summers at the "BAVARIAN FESTIVAL" in BARNESVILLE. does anyone remember that? i believe it was at "lakewood park" EIEIEIEIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. remember the stacks of beer cups that went all of the way from one end of the beer hall to the other. and the hoots and hollers when a new keg was tapped. my dad used to book alot of the bands, and was a polkaholic, so we spent from like mid july to august in sunny and "sticky" (that's got to be in the dictionary for humid) mahonoy city, i believe. all i remember is our camper having the big poster for the fest ducktaped to the side of it. maybe you saw it. and we stayed at some place that had 2 lakes and held flea markets. eventually other campers saw us squatting (not really, we did have permission) and this old man that owned the place ended up turning it into a makeshift campground. does anyone remember that place? i think that i had to opportunity to do a drive by lakewood like 10 or 15 years ago and it was like a ghost park, weeds overgrown, does anyone know what became of it, probably a paved parking lot for a walmart or something. did anyone know of "kermit deitrich". the man who either owned the park or the fest. i know he died many years ago, but my brother and i used to play with his daughters. would like to say hi. oh and my brother insists that we also used to play with "WEIRD AL YANKOVICK" before he was famous, as his uncle is Frank Yankovick, who used to play at the fest. oh well, enough nostalgia. this site is an excellent preservation of americana. did not realize how coal miney i was until reading dictionary. oh one last thing does anyone remember the "MONKEY BAR" somewhere in the coal regions. i remember going with my parents into this basic clean little bar when i was a kid (1970's) and there was this little monkey who was trained to take your money and pour you a beer. seems to me that the name "FAUST" comes to mind. any info on any of these tidbits, email me at ronemus@igateway.com. thanks.

Comments: Hi! I found this site when I decided to go back to Tamaqua, Pa. Class of 1960 High School Reunion. I didn't know anything like this existed, but when I found this site, I showed my two kids (Sean & Kelly) what life in the coal regions was like, printing most of the stuff on this cite. I went back to Tamaqua for my reunion Aug. 19th and then dropped my daughter off at Clark University, Worchester, Mass. It was great to see all the "old timers" at my reunion and to see the coal cracking area again. Since my return to California, I thought it would be nice to let the rest of "youse guys" know how much I appreciate this cite. Thanks a lot for the memories. I hear the Raiders beat Jim Thorpe; but I always liked it when it was Mauch Chunk! Go Raiders.... Ron K., a Californian since 1970; but a Pennsylhoovian forever.

Moved to Philadelphia and married, had 5 children, but often returned to "The Region" to visit my parents, Charles and Edith (Plowis) Klenarski...they're deceased now, of course. My children loved Ashland and spent many an hour climbing on "Mother" down on Centre Street and also adored The Lokie and now my grandchildren visit there every summer. Comments: Recently visited Schuylkill County and toured the Little White Church site in Ringtown. Highly recommend it for history buffs. The restoration is excellent, and the stones and markers have been re-engraved, so now one can see tombs dating back to the pre-Revolutionary War era. While visting the area, I also saw the Eckley Miners' Village. It was amazing to see how people existed so well on so very little. In her last months on earth, my mother told me many stories about her childhood as the daughter of immigrants whose lives depended on her father's work as a coal miner. At Eckley the stories and my mother, as a child, came alive! It was a wonderful experience.

Comments: I laughed so hard when I viewed this site. My co-workers down south here laugh at me when I say things like, "Onacounta and reddin up." I printed a few of my words and let them see it's in the dictionary!!! There is a reason why I talk like that! You can take the girl out of Tamaqua, but you can't take Tamaqua out of the girl!!

Comments: What accent? I have lived here for 39 years and I don't hear it! Married a girl from Reading in 1982, and at that point she had never heard of pierogies! Lived on Dutch Hill until getting married, then transplanted myself to the East End. I will always be a Dutch Hiller at heart. Having a flashback to Gina & Scram's bar on Elm street, Matalavage's corner store on Union street, playing up the coal bank and being afraid there really were Indians in the Indian Hole, seeing the Uke's drive by on top of the coal banks, standing outside my buddies house and yelling "Yo, Yo, Georgie!" so he would come out to play, playing down the park by the radio station and so on....., It makes me wonder as I read through the other messages submitted by people who have moved from the area as to why someone would do such a thing, wot bein smack dab in the middle of the creation of 2 of the best things in life, Yingling Logger and Mrs. T's Parogee's!

Comments: Another "coal craker" from Chendo...Shenandoah HS Class of 68. It is great to know that I'm not the only one who still speaks "Coalspeak". Great memories from Chendo-swimning up the greenie or the jiggers; parties up Raven Run or over the Valley; great pizza at Neopolitan or Armondos'; terrific kielbossa from Kowalonek's. Someone said "You can take the boy out of the coal regions, but you cannot take the coal region out of the boy". I'm going to outen the light and go to bed.

Comments: I just tuned in- I am a son of a coal miner- but operated a "Beer Garden" in Carbondale, in the 60's and most of my customers were old miners!! Squeekie's Bar--it was named after my father who started back in the 30's. He had a high pitched voice when he used to drive the mules in the mines- that is where he got his nick name- and he carried to the "Beer Garden" later on in life. I'll be back at a later date--for sure-- B. Andrews
