NBVM 83- Yuengling finally worked it's way over here from Tampa but I haven't found any draft beer yet- and it looks like Yuengling's thinks everybody down here is a redneck- they're not making Premium- just Premium Light and Lager.

Comments: Hi everybody...what a wonderful site. I grew up In Forrestville & graduatd from Cass Twp. High School in '62. I also graduated from Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing '65...so anyone out there let me know so we can take a walk down memory lane. How well I remember the Globe, Willow Lake, Rokosczs not to mention Mootz's peanut rolls, pierogis, halupkies....I am getting homesick just thinking about it. I live in Georgia now but Pottsville will always be home to me.

Looking forward to possible forced retirement thanks to stupid Commonwealth policies. Anybody out there from the family or IHHS 1964 drop a line. We had an excellent 35th reunion last year.

Comments: Any information on 2 bars in the Mt. Carmel area: Pinky's and Pinnamonti. I lived in the Mt. Carmel area until 1956 (after completing 8th grade our family moved to Reading - would have been a 1960 Mt. Carmel grad). Frequented Pinnamonti's supporting the baseball team when I would visit my Aunt and Uncle during summer vacations and I think Pinky's might be owned by a classmate. Any news would be appreciated. Love this website have been viewing the messages for several years.

Comments: Interesting to read some of the comments in your guestbook and especially from those who left the region. As for me, life long resident of Glen Lyon, Newport High School, Class of '66. Wish I could go back to that time now. The coal breaker in the middle of town was a focal point. Goin' to the other side, meant going to the other side of town. East side/West side. My dad worked the mines all his life, mainly in Wanamie, Pa. Most coal breakers gone now. The one in G.L. brunt down on Halloween night 1973, what a blaze. Well nice site, enjoyed the stories. Be back at some future time.

My wife got a kick out of this site -- all the things I talked about and still do -- she now knows its all true!!! Hey -- here's one for ya - they are starting to sell Yuengling Lager on TAP at a lot of the bars down here. What's really funny is when people try to pronounce it --- HA! Even funnier is that the locals (those not from the coal regions living down here) think its a Chinese beer!!! Go figure. People who try it - like it. This causes some concern for me --- will we run out of it?? Hope not --- take care.

I laughed about our slang and didn't realize how strange we speak, but I am proud to be a resident of the Coal Region. Keep up the good work on this site, it is great. One suggestion in the slang section, the people from Mahanoy City used the slang, looka, meaning to look at. Example, looka this. Thank you for all the laughs and especially recalling great memories.

Comments: Originally From Atlas. I pop in regularly. The Atlas Honor Roll Parade is my favorite picture. I grew up on that block and had so much fun. I would watch the coal miners going into Doyle's cafe, they would socialize for hours only to go and do it all over again the next day. My Grandparents,Joe and Adeline Altomare owned a Grocery store on the corner years after closing,It was the place for many in the neighborhood to meet and talk. Oh,how I miss those days. Thank You.

A co-worker (from Allentown) and I were literally screaming with laughter over how many of the CoalSpeak terms we either still use or have heard while growing up. Now we know why we often get those "funny looks" from other co-workers when they hear us talking. Jeez, I miss the Ackamee and Ying Yang.

Comments: I can't believe how great this site is! My husband is from Hazleton and it was wonderful to find this for him. The picture of Senappe's Pizza brought tears to my eyes - on our many trips back "home" it is our favorite snack, that and Tastykakes which for some reason we can't get here. Too bad you can't have Senappe's delivered by mail. Loved seeing the entries for Coal Speak - I have teased him many times over "coobie hole" and "dunky." Thanks for providing this taste of home...

This Irish Valley, Heckscherville, and all the other patches; Cherry Valley (where I live), Thomaston, Boiler row, Pine Knot, Coal Castle, Greenbury, Crows Hollow, Mackeysburg, Glen Carbon, Buck Run, Mount Pleasant, etc., I missed a few, and quite a few no longer exist, because they were stripped out by coal companies. People couldn't wait to get out of the valley. Now, when someone dies, as the body is being carried out the front door, the new occupants are moving in the back door. (I'm just fibbin' a little.) The bad part about living out here is that most of us are on leased grounds owned by a coal company. And one never knows, if,or when, they will tell us to PACK OUR BAGS!!

My grandparents were miners and my dad tells me stories of going through the culm for coal to heat the stove and my mom getting a ride to school on the back of a coal truck. I had to leave after college (Philly) - like most of my family - in order to get a decent job. Had fun growing up there - where nothing seems to have changed in over 35 years. Wouldn't want to return, but nice memories of the corner store, bike rides through the alleys, hearing the church bells at noon, Summer bazzars... Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Comments: Born and raised in Centralia, Pa. Class of 74 Mt Carmel High. Interested in hearing from anyone from school. Don't get home much, but when I do, it really doesn't seem to change much, if at all...
