As for me, life long resident of Glen Lyon, Newport High School, Class of '66. Wish I could go back to that time now. The coal breaker in the middle of town was a focal point. Goin' to the other side, meant going to the other side of town. East side/West side. My dad worked the mines all his life, mainly in Wanamie, Pa. Most coal breakers gone now. The one in G.L. brunt down on Halloween night 1973, what a blaze. Well nice site, enjoyed the stories. Be back at some future time. |

I get home five or six times a year to visit family and friends -- always love going home. My wife got a kick out of this site -- all the things I talked about and still do -- she now knows its all true!!! Hey -- here's one for ya - they are starting to sell Yuengling Lager on TAP at a lot of the bars down here. What's really funny is when people try to pronounce it --- HA! Even funnier is that the locals (those not from the coal regions living down here) think its a Chinese beer!!! Go figure. People who try it - like it. This causes some concern for me --- will we run out of it?? Hope not --- take care. |

A co-worker (from Allentown) and I were literally screaming with laughter over how many of the CoalSpeak terms we either still use or have heard while growing up. This Irish Valley, Heckscherville, and all the other patches; Cherry Valley (where I live), Thomaston, Boiler row, Pine Knot, Coal Castle, Greenbury, Crows Hollow, Mackeysburg, Glen Carbon, Buck Run, Mount Pleasant, etc., I missed a few, and quite a few no longer exist, because they were stripped out by coal companies. People couldn't wait to get out of the valley. Now, when someone dies, as the body is being carried out the front door, the new occupants are moving in the back door. (I'm just fibbin' a little.) The bad part about living out here is that most of us are on leased grounds owned by a coal company. And one never knows, if,or when, they will tell us to PACK OUR BAGS!! |

I had to leave after college (Philly) - like most of my family - in order to get a decent job. Had fun growing up there - where nothing seems to have changed in over 35 years.
