My dad to this day tells us stories of the days he worked in the mines, he started when he was 8 yrs old. and retired in the 70's, he was buried twice in the mines but went right back in. Comments: I'm formally from Forestville, and currently living in Las Vegas, Nevada. My husband is James V. Davis formally from Palo Alto Pa. I attended Forestville and Cass Township High school. I received my High School Diploma from Reading High School. After World War Two, we moved to Pottstown PA. and lived there fifty years. We visited my Mother in Forestville for many years also my husbands sister and friends until we moved here. Two of our daughters husbands and their children live in California, one son wife and children live in Peoria Arizona and one daughter and family live here. We're very, very happy live closer and see our Children and grand children often these days. Altho I do miss all or friends and family members in Pa. Forestville always had the best water, vegetables, fruit, milk, meats and etc. and Fresh Air!

Growing up in Shamokin was a wonderful experience: full of unlocked doors, girl scout cookies, going to town,Grove dances,and riding around to name a few! My two closest and dearest friends were introduced to me at the Washington School and we are as close today as we were back then! Over the years, I have met so many people who had relatives from Shamokin or have passed through our town....truly:All Roads Do Lead To Shamokin. For many, I was the first person that they have met from Shamokin(most never heard of it)and now it is a place that is a part of their lexicon.

Comments: I am originally from Lehighton, Carbon County--just at the edge of the coal region and nearest to Summit Hill and Lansford--we went over the mountain and shopped at Bright's sometimes.
A few years ago I was living back there with my sister when an opportunity arose to write a history of Carbon County--a chance I jumped at. The result was "Smokestacks and Black Diamonds," which was published around 1998 by the Canal History and Technology Press. The name of the press may sound pretty grim, but actually the book has had a fair number of readers and they've seemed to enjoy it. There may be some reviews about it online at Amazon.com or Barnesandnoble.com--right now I'm not sure. But if anybody wants to know what it's about I can send them a review.

I REMEMBER MANY TIMES GROWING UP IN MOUNT CARBON, SNEAKING INTO THE BREWERY AT NIGHT FOR A DRINK OF BAVARIAN RIGHT OUT OF THE VATS, SLEEPING OUT AT NIGHTS AND SNEAKING OVER TO TUMBLING RUN DAMS FOR A MIDNIGHT SWIM, AND BICYCLING OUT TO HEISLERS DAIRY FOR A MILK SHAKE AND SOME MINIATURE GOLF. I ALSO REMEMBER MANY SATURDAY NIGHTS AT THE OLD MOUNT CARBON SPEEDWAY. WATCHING RACES WHEN IT WAS OPEN, AND CHASING PARKERS (SKUNKING) WHEN IT CLOSED. THE PIT AREA WAS OUR BASEBALL DIAMOND FOR MANY YEARS BEFORE FOREST HILLS WAS DEVELOPED. IT WAS NOTHING FOR US TO PLAY THREE GAMES A DAY UP THERE. MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT. HOW 'BOUT THE MOUNT CARBON FIRE COMPANY, MY OLD WATERING HOLE, AND THE PLACE I SPENT MOST OF MY EARLY LIFE, WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOME WITH MY FAMILY. Comments: Hi i've got "BUGDUST" in my veins but it's from originally living in Vesta#7 a small soft coal town near Brownsville Pa. Love this site and reading the COALCRACKER Maybe someone out there can help me, im trying to buy a small amount of anthracite coal 50to100 lbs.The bigger the lumps the better. I use it to engrave nameplates on the custom exotic wood pocket watches that I make. any help would be appreciated. This is a serious request.
