Comments: I was born and raised in Minersville and have since lived in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, San Diego and now Los Angeles, CA. My father and brother were behind Moran's Soda. What great memories! I got my educational start at Penn State Schuylkill Campus and my on-air radio start at WPPA in Pottsville, having been the first female newscaster/air personality hired. My best memories are of the warm, lovely people. What a great website!

I love the website. Is it just me, or is there a Schuylkill County over-lay throughout the site? Authors home town perhaps? NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT!

Comments: It's been a while since I checked in here. I really enjoy this site. I'm a graduate of Frackville High SCHOOL CLASS OF "51. Nostalgia sets in at holiday time and I remember all the fun my friends and I had ice-skating on Wagner's Dam. Sleigh riding, Christmas caroling VERY EARLY on Christmas morning were some other fond memories. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers and shares any of these experiences.

Comments: Leaving Annunciation-St.George school to got to Whalen's candy store was cool. So was riding my Green-Machine to Lenny's store on Lloyd Street. Does anybody remember the candy store on East Center Street up from the J-Bar where you had to enter through the basement? They had the best peanut butter milkshakes. I was just home this past week to bury my grandfather, Joe Yanall, who was a second father to me as well as a good friend. he lived in Glovers Hill and worked in the mines before becoming a State Trooper. The lighted trees in Shenandoah were fantastic. It brought back nostalgic feelings when Shenandoah had one of the best Christmas lights display in Schuylkill County. I remember when Mahanoy City had a Christmas tree on Route 54 and it would always get hit when the bars closed. If anyone is in Shenandoah and wants to view old photos and momentos, visit Catizone's Barber Shop on Main Street next to the Cappy Theater. Mr. Cat has alot of memoirs and he gives a mean haircut. The "high and tight" is his specialty. I'll be home for Christmas (Chendo style).

Comments: Born and raised in Minersville (actually New Minersville). I graduated in 1993 and headed off to Philadelphia for college. A career and better pay brought me to Virginia. I will always have fond memories of: Palermo's, St. Francis dances, New Minersville Hosey dances, hanging out at the mall (before we could drive), Little League Night, sleepovers in West West Terrace, the "Treadway", Block Parties, and having wonderful friends that I still remain very close with. My boyfriend is trying to learn the lingo and understand this part of the world. I will always be back to visit!!

Until I saw this, I thought I just had trouble in english class, now I realize where it came from!!! It warms my heart to see the phrases and words my parents still use to this day! Thanks!

Comments: What a terrific site. Am researching family history--grandfather was born & raised in Gilberton, greatgrandfather emigrated from Lithuania in 1900. Granddad moved to North Jersey early the depression, but his brothers and cousins all stayed in Gilberton or Frackville. Grandmother born in Big Mine Run. Coalspeak is terrific--I forwarded the site address to all my cousins. It's EXACTLY the way my granddad spoke his entire life, and my uncle has the same speech patterns. Just reading the entries I could hear his voice in my head.

Comments: Being raised in the Hanover Twp. section of Wilkes-Barre, I really appreciate CoalRegion.com. As a kid, we played on big shale pits dotted w/ birch trees (how ironic), trudged through heavily polluted streams and investigated abandoned mines and breakers. It's amazing we survived such hazerdous conditions. Our survival can be attributed to luck and the warmth and pride area residents had about their communities. The work ethic of the immigrant miners is still evidenced in the N.E.PA workforce. Enjoy, Enjoy!

How do you get an elephant out of Nanticoke?
Put a bubuska and green sneakers on it's head and put it on the bus to public square.

Comments: This is a great site!! I've been researching my family from Hughestown (Luzern County)PA, Inkerman, PA and Pittston. The surnames of these families are SCHMALTZ (American spelling), SCHMALZ (Switzerland spelling) & EUSTICE. In 1834, Gottlieb (Levi was his nickname) SCHMALZ was born in Bern, Switzerland. He came to the US in 1850 & in 1859 he married Louise Lurvdbrock (b. in Bern, Switzerland in 1841). Gottlieb & Louise are my great-great grandparents. The EUSTICE family was orignally from England (?) & settled in Inkerman, PA & had a large family. John EUSTICE & Elizabeth Parker EUSTICE are my great-grandparents. The short version of this entry is to say thank you for this web site, as it has helped me to put the pieces of my family puzzle together! If there's anyone who has a connection to or information about my family, please email me. God Bless

Comments: My grandmother and grandfather both went to Coal Township HighSchool in the early 1930's
Today as I write this, the school is almost torn down, demolished after years of abandonment, and what a waste.
Buildings are not made as sturdy or as beautiful as that anymore. It was always my favorite building,
the old football field overlooking the town is still my favorite spot on this earth. I own my late
grandmothers house located by that school and I treasure the time I spend up there.
If someone could please send me a picture of the school when it first opened or even when it was open
as a school, I would greatly appreciate it. A picture of the old school in her glory days would
mean all the world to me.

Comments: Just read a message from Lou Rufus. When I lived in Mahanoy City, there was a Mary Rufus who lived up the street from us. That was in the 600 block of West Spruce St. We've been out of there for 24 years, so I don't know what ever happened to her. I know she had some Siamese cats that belonged to her son. I use to help her out when she needed help.

Comments: I'm a Shenandoah native and graduate of Cardinal Brennan H.S. and Delaware Valley College. I miss my family, friends, and the woods. I also miss kilbo, boilo, and yuengling. If our county politicians brought in good jobs to our area, I would have stayed home. I'll probably lose my coal region accent but I'll always hang on to the coal region values.
