Comments:	HHS '71, Hazle Twnshp Jr Hi, Mother of Grace elem. Been gone since 1975..I go home mostly every year. It's a small world out here. I have run into several Hazletonians over the past 26 yrs. It is always nice to visit home. This site does bring back a lot of memories. Anyone out there remember hangin out at the diner? all 2 of them? How about the Wed nite block parties in the summer behind the Y, and all that walking up and down Broad st on Wed and Fri nites. For a small town, we really had some good times, that did not require any drugs..just good old hangin out, having innocent fun..would love to hear from anyone who shares these same memories.

Comments:	I was born in Sunbury,Pa. And raised up in Shamokin,Pa. My Dad...and Brother"s were miners a one time. I still go and visi my family in Shamokin. I remember when I was a little girl. Sitting in my Dad"s car. We drove over the Cameren bridge.And I would watch all the guy"s coming from the Mine hole...all lined up...walking over the bridge...to go get there shower"s...afther working in the mine hole"s. It brought a lot of memories back. Just looking at these Picture"s.

Comments:	As I read the entries in this Guestbook I reflect upon how my life is full of health, wealth and happiness. I've decided that having been raised in the Coal Region makes me unique and was actually a wonderful foundation for where I am today. As mentioned in previous entries, some of the experiences(going to bars at age 15)are not the kind of situations I would tolerate with my own children. However, I'm not bitter about what I've done and have grown. It is always enjoyable to visit the area even if I do see it under somewhat different eyes. Thank you for this site. It is a welcomed connection to "home."

Comments:	Hi, it's Katie again. I just wanted to let you know GREG that I do agree with you coalcrackers. I am one! Just not a very proud one. I am not bitter. The point is that just because there are a lot of friendly people doesn't always make it good. I got a shitty education, yes. But nobody seems to care about the quality of the education there. I'm not proud to have gone in bars at the ripe ole age of 15! When you're that age, it's cool! Do I want my kids to have the same upbring? NO!! It's pathectic! I love the food, the block parties, the memories, etc. I hate to go there and see the ones who still have no direction in their lives. The ones who suck down the quarts to this day. Oh yeah, the only difference is they got their kids at home waiting for them. You're right about one thing. I still go back to visit the ones I care about. I pity the rest!

Comments:	My mom, Clara, just passed away (Mar. 20, 2001). Her folks were Alexi and Laura (von Derlich) Gregonis. She had six brothers and sisters. They grew up in Shenandoah Heights. Alex, a coal miner, died c. 1933; Laura had worked as a "cafeteria lady" in a Shenandoah high school for many years--until her physician made her quit when she was in her 70's. I would love to hear from anyone knowing anything about this family since I am working on our family tree.

Comments:	Neat website! Thanks to Peg for the lead. From Glovers Hill, I graduated JWCooper in '59. Spent over twenty years trying to get out of New Jersey, finally made it here to Gainesville, GA. Good place to be. Just like the coal region, only further south. And, you don't have to shovel heat! I get back to Shenandoah at least once a year (Italian feast), sometimes more, but the famous 80 bars in town are GONE! Just the Columbia hosey on West Center to go to.

Comments:	Found this site amusing. Gotta admit, there are so many good memories growing up there. However, there are also too many bad ones. I only visit now because I have little family left there. It's so depressing. The same people still party hardy that did when I left in the early 80's. They're the ones who got stuck and went nowhere fast. The education stank, as the teachers supplied the booze (and sometimes even the pot). Thought it was cool then. But some people finally grow up! Lots of spineless people. And lots of good, hardworking people come from the coal region. They're the ones who got out!

Comments:	Happened to be in that area about one month ago, its no different now as it was when I left it in 72.Plain and simple. Dirty, illiterate and it sucks. Always did and always will. More hicks and yonkos than the south has rednecks.....What is needed is a massive snowstorm of about 3 months duration followed by another Tropical Storm Agnes to clean the place up. Looks like the aftermath of an atomic bomb in that region..

Comments:	I was born in Ashland a long time ago but return every Labor Day to sit on the "topatown" and watch that ABA Parade! It's a pity Ashland's shrinking so badly (I see the 2000 Census puts my hometown at less than 4,000 Coal Crackers). Still, I do love Ashland (but not enough to live there...it gets dirtier every time I visit and the citizens are degenerating into a mob of ruffians and lazabouts!). And GAWD LOVE THEM who stay there because they love it!
