Comments: I lived briefly in Pottsville, then eight years in Cressona, attended Cressona Elementary and briefly at Blue Mountain Middle School. Eventually graduated from Exeter High School in Reading, 1984, but returned to the area to attend Bloomsburg U (class of '88). Miss it tremendously. Fishing at Hoy's Pond, messing with my neighbors' horses (Sorry Mr. Litchko!), a REAL Boy Scout Troop, St. Ambrose Catholic Church in S-H. Even more than 20 years after leaving the area, I still find it hard to relate to the transient suburbanites in Montgomery County, who know nothing of small town life and unfortunately have little or no civic pride.

Keep this site going. I just found it today and plan to visit often! We need a bigger Cressona contingency here!

Comments: As a kid, I visited Lansford area for years. My aunt a Nun at St. Michaels Convent in Lansford ministered to the miners on Sundays. I found her picture at the mine museum in town. I also roughly model the L&NE and call my road the Long Valley and Tidewater.

My memories of Shenandoah is that it was one of the weirdest places on Earth, and I loved it! Shenandoah is definitely the quintessential coal region town. Read recent book "Faded Coat of Blue" - a Civil war mystery whose main character is from Pottsville, although most of action takes place elsewhere. Recommend it. Comments: what a great visit...i can't remember the last time that i laughed so hard that my stomach hurt and tears rolled down my cheeks...only coal crackers can truly appreciate being able to laugh at yourself...by the way, the "twinnies" swimming hole was just east of the Herc outside of mahanoy city, off the train tracks toward delano...not a place for nonswimmers...first step in-up to knee...2nd step in-up to waist...3rd step in-way over head...need the sub that found titanic to find bottom of this hole...
