Comments: Doing research on Family tree- Grandparents were all immigrants into Pa. Worked in coalmines; my parents grew up in Tamaqua, or New Columbus. I'm researching Dunsavage and Chiarizio in those areas. Would like to know if its possible to find out about coal-miner deaths in 1918, or high school records around Tamaqua in the 1930's. Any help out there? I will be back. My Aunt Dolly and Uncle Joe had Tumas's Bar on W. Broad St. in Tamaqua in the '40's and '50's. Looks like a good site with lots of info.

Comments: It's good viewing e-mails from people who moved out of the coal region and that they don't forget about everyone back home. My Sacramento friends love this website and some of them are from PA, and totally agree with the "CoalSpeak Dictionary".

Comments: Taking a break from working on the energy situation out here. Forty new power plants are projected to come in for review between now and October. I'm grateful for my company to allow me to bring a laptop home on the weekends.

Once in awhile I contact a bunch of friends back home via phone. It's great to be able to stay in touch with old friends and find out the latest scoop back home (Chris Cuff, Jeff Metkus, John Catizone, Ron Bane Trooper "Chinker" Kowalik, Janette Basso, etc..)

All my new friends out here love the website, especially the Coalspeak Dictionary. Now they realize why Oh da f--- is part of my everday vocabulary. Again, congrats on a great website: I'm over 3-thousand miles away but it's like home is just around the corner.

Comments: Maria from Delano and the Guest book awakened some nostalgia about a Railroad.

The 12 miles of Lehigh Valley Railroad track in Schuylkill County between Raven Run and Delano were abandoned By Conrail in 1975. The Lehigh Valley Steam Locomotives of my boyhood (before Conrail) ran trains of Hopper Cars filled with anthracite hard coal up railroad grades from Raven Run and Kohinoor Jct. Colliery through Shenandoah ontoYatesville and Barryville and Park Place through Trenton into the railroad classification yards at Delano.

Sitting on the mountain tops in Shenandoah – called the “Eagle Rocks” or the slag pile known as “The Heaven Bank” – one could view a 2 p.m. local Lehigh Valley freight train with a Caboose on the end - drop off Stock Cars with Cattle or Hogs at the Shenandoah Abbetory siding and shuttling freight cars at the East Cherry Street warehouse siding.

Around 4:30 p.m. – one could catch two Lehigh Valley Steam Locomotives pulling 40 Lehigh Valley anthracite coal Hopper Cars with three more Locomotives pushing in the rear of the train with a Caboose at the end - on through Shenandoah into Delano.

An 5:30 p.m. some two Pennsylvania Steam Locomotives (with sloped back tenders – no Caboose) arrived from the William Penn Breaker with 15 Pennsylvania Hopper Cars of coal - switched on to the Lehigh Valley tracks near West Laurel St. in Shenandoah and pulled and pushed the train up the railroad grades into Delano.

And yes, the Reading and Northern Railroad now services Delano – but all the railroad tracks are gone from Shenandoah.
