Last summer my children and husband and I went to Pioneer Tunnel in Ashland which was very interesting for them. I do have good memories of Shenandoah and the area and laughed at CoalSpeak!

Comments:	Centralia Mine Fire: Sometime ago I visited Ashland, PA - took a tour of the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train. I loved to take photos of Ashland narrow gauge steam train Lokie named Henry Clay. It brought back memories of a Lokie that ran in Shenandoah from Indian Ridge hauling mine coal cars (vicinity of Jolly Jack Robel’s home - Route 54 near Franklin St.) past the Heaven Bank and the Eagle Rocks and dumping the coal into Shenandoah Breaker. And memories of - Jolly Jack Robel’s Orchestra in Shenandoah broadcasting music on early radio Sunday program called the Siswein Hour and the Davison Hour. The guide at Pioneer Tunnel in Ashland pointed us in the direction of town of Centralia and the Centralia Mine Fire. If you access http:// sombra5.tripod.com/centralia.html – you get some idea of how the mine fire has destroyed the town. Centralia – A Town On Fire! Amen!

They made sure that my brothers and I still respected the Coal Region way of life and provided us with much education on the subject. While all my friends were taking vacations with their families to Disney World or the Jersey Shore, I was going "Up Home" to walk down memory lane over and over with my folks. Comments:	Your Polish Grandmother! Everyone remember his or her Home-Town for many reasons. One Home-Town old-fashioned side dish entree, close to some “CoalCrackers” memories, is introduction of homemade Polish Pierogies out of your Grandmother’s kitchen at Christmas Family Dinner onto the general public. I believe it was a humble start in 1938 when - Unia Polek - Group #27 - first made there old-fashioned homemade pierogies in members’ kitchen and stored them in the old Ice-House located in the northeast section in the borough of Shenandoah (before TV frozen dinners were invented). This was the first time homemade pierogies were available in quantity outside of your Grandmother’s kitchen - maybe all year around – maybe if they weren’t all sold out? The demand for pierogies grew till it prompted Theodore Twardzik Sr., founder of Mrs. T”s Pierogies to form Ateeco, Inc. in December 1952 in Shenandoah - and set-up and market a production line of frozen package pierogies. Yes, Mrs. T’s pierogies can now be found in Super-market freezers from Alaska to East Over- Shoe, New Jersey and on the World Wide Web at www.pierogy.com. And, I believe the old Ice-House (or The People’s Ice Company?) was located in area of East Penn St., where the Reading Railroad tracks crossed over the Leigh Valley Railroad tracks in Shenandoah? Amen?

Comments:	I moved west two years ago to tend school and start a business. Although I love the northwest, I do miss certain things about PA. Certain things you just can not get here. When I ask people about chow-chow or club sandwiches (the candy bar from Costas-york), they look at me like I am crazy. Another important factor is the seasons. We have rain and non-rain. Comments:	I was fascinated by your site!Being a coal miner,s daughter so to speak; I would love to know of any links to the old REDRUN Coal mines in the Ralston area where there was a town called REDBURN, PA. Most of my brothers and sisters were born there, most of whom are all deceased.I also lived when a child up on MCINTYRE MOUNTAIN where Dad worked in the mine. I know there was a town there also at one time as there was a cemetery there and guess alot of children died from smallpox or another disease! These things fascinate me as I am beginning geneology and would like any info someone might have on this subject!I am so glad I clicked on this link! Anna
