Comments: Class of 66, a lot of miles and roads between then and now. Wish I would have known then what I know now, things would have been a lot differnt. Served my country like a lot of us coal crackers did. Married Donna Clews and have two great kids, Lorie married Don Ossman after college and gave us a granddaughter,Schuyler Olivia. And a Son Christopher a Staff Sgt. In the Army,Another Coal Cracker who serves. Eckley. Just 8 miles from Hazleton.
I remember my Father who is 88 selling
coal (rice coal) for 3.00 per ton in
the fifties, now the same ton of Rice
is $100.00 per ton.

Comments: My father came from Centralia; he was born in Philadelphia, in 1915, and raised in Centraila, after his father died in the flu epidemic of 1918. Other relatives were the McIntyre family. My last visit was 1968 @ Centralia and 1978 @ Barnesville, for Bavarian Summer Fest--almost as good as Oktoberfest, and 3600 miles closer to Philadelphia... Comments: my father always said that during the Korean War they always gave the "Coal
Crackers" the machine gun to hump up the huge mountains of Korea. The sergeants in charge always looked around for a big miner who they knew would get the job done. They were and still are tough people! I have natural gas but still burn chestnut coal. It is cheaper and provides better, lasting ,
toasty heat. Nothing beats warming up by my Harman Coal stove when it is 15 degrees out. My dogs lay next to it all night! Dad was a "driller" in the "strippings" for over 30 years and has seen it all. Has "black lung" to prove it. This site is a tribute to all the coal crackers who went before us!
