Comments: Enjoyed this site. Anyone from Nescopeck? I left when I was a kid but went to elementary school in Nescopeck and of course had Miss Souder for 5th grade (1948). Remember swimming at the powder hole, Weiss's bend on big wop creek, also in the Susquehanna(not a good idea but we did it), harvesting stuff on Gould's island. Family was Pa dutch and my grandmother was stunned when i went away to collitch, came home and told her that we were deutch, hence german.

Comments: The most unique site yet; my folks are from Locust Gap and Mt. Carmel. Dad started in the breaker at 13 in 1916 and was underground soon after. Mom's folks owned a store on 4th and Vine. Mom still living at 83 and several aunts approach their late nineties. Keep in touch and stay warm.

Comments: upstaters, found a great series of books written by thomas d. eckhart from upstate, they are history books of the area with pictures of the area, some broken down as families, some as industry,some as schools and so forth. worthwhile to look into if you like the memories of old little towns and their roots. have a great time reading them and I enjoy this site and reading all about the old places.

Comments: If you want to read about the coal regions, by all means find some books and short stories by John O'Hara who grew up in Pottsville and whose home has a historic plaque on it about a block from the YUENGLING mansion. He has changed the names of towns and streets, for example Tower City is called Mountain City but you still know about what, where and whom he is writing about. He is considered one of our country's most outstanding novelists.

Comments: My mother was from, and her sisters still live in Maiseville. To this day I look forward to my visits to the region. It's warm-hearted (although sometimes a little suspicious of outsiders) inhabitants, and it's unequalled sence of community. Something you don't find in the cookie-cutter, suburbia that I have to call home now. I love Schuylkill County's little villages and hamlets, and hope to someday move to the region.
