I grew up in Beaver Brook and have the best memories of playing with the other kids in town. We used to sleigh ride on the coal banks, ride trikes in the silt, look for fossils, play four square, and build club houses out of old junk. We always had fun and we always had layers of coal dust on us at the end of the day.

Thanks for having such a great site.
Your coal speak dictionary captures
some of the feeling of the great people
that make "the region" such a special place.
It makes me want to get a couple of "Kortz"
from Joe Miracks bar, pick up a Coney Island
hamburger, and watch "them Phil's" play baseball.

1st visit in a little while. I like the new look of the web-site. Memorial Day weekend @ the beach; guaranteed to run in to some old friends. They refer to "us" Pennsylvanians as SHOOBIES in South Jersey. I just accepted a promotion and I look forward to the best perk:
MOVING BACK TO NE PA. Cheaper beer, better pizza & MUCH nicer people!!

My parents were from Mahanoy City/Boston Run. I am related to the Williamson/Wilkinson ancestors of Bowman's and St. Nicholas (outside of Mahanoy City). I still have relatives in that area. Just went back a couple of weeks ago to visit the Zeigler side of the family (Kaczmarczyk and Morgan families of Barnsville and Boston Run). It's nice to have roots there.

I can't believe this sight! My Dad was born in Shenandoah and his brother lives in Barnesville. My grandmother lived in Barnesville for many years and then moved to Mahanoy City. I never thought I'd see anything describing the sites, sounds, phrases, beers, soda's, etc. from this area. I could never explain it as a kid to my friends, but now at age 36 I can prove what I have talked about for years.. This site is great. Does anyone know of "Ruts" tavern in Mahanoy City? How about "Hamms" drive in restraunt on route 309?

I would visit my mother's family in the Eynon, Olyphant area all the time. I used to love to see the mine fires at night. Looking at the Coal Region Dictionary I can still hear my grandparents talking, in fact I still say some of the things. I am proud that my ancestors were coal miners. This site is great, keep up the good work.

Interested in information on my dad, John (Jack) J. Gallagher, 1923-1951, and my grandfather, Martin B. Gallagher. I would even appreciate having the names of the Shamokin newspaper and high school in the late 30's and early 40's. I was born in Wilkes-Barre, the only child of Jack and Ann Louise (Morris) Gallagher, and only grandchild of Martin and Margaret (Knight) Gallagher. Thanks much. Pat

I was viewing the Coal Crackers and noticed that Dan Ficca and Frank Bolick are missing. Dan Ficca played for the NY Jets around 1962 and Frank Bolick played for the Expos in the mid-90s and currently plays professional baseball for the Chiba-Lotta Marines near Tokyo, Japan. Both individuals currently reside in Mt. Carmel Township. Please add them to the Coal Craker Page.
I have been in the military since I left in 1984 and currently serving in the United States Marine Corps flying helicopters. My parents still live in the same house in Strong. It is no longer pink, it is white now.

Hi, Haven't been at this site for quite a while. I'm ashamed of myself. What prompted this visit? On one of my recent visits to our local American Legion Club (Crystal River, Fl., Citrus County) I met a couple ladies originally from Frackville, Pa.. After reminiscing for a while, one of them mentioned that there are quite a few ex Schuylkill Countions in this area of Florida, and couldn't we possibly form a club and meet occasionally. There are a few clubs such as this that already make the American Legion here their meeting place. If anyone would be interested (or knows of someone that might be) please e-mail me. I'll try to get the ball rolling.

Keep the hard coal moving. My place of birth and pretty proud of it. Still look forward to visiting and seeing all those who remained in the area, attend all those picnics, and enter into discussions about the good old days of picking and cracking coal.

My wife and I will traveling there on business in early June. She will be seeing Mahanoy city for the first time in her life. And yes, Dr. Howard Ervin is alive and well. Due to the strength from coal in his veins, he still working full-time as a university professor!
