I was born in Allentown, PA - but mom and pop were both born
and raised in Shamokin. Both my Grandfathers (one Irish - the other
Hungarian) died from coal mining injuries when my parents were quite
young. Every third weeked my family would make the trek and bunk
in at our Aunts houses on West Willow Street (just from the "crick")
and on the last street atop "Bunker Hill". Favorite memories
are: -Late Coney Island feed bags with cooked onions on "burgs"
and the finest "snow" of chopped onions heaped on a mustard
slathered dog. -The subtle varieties of Haloupkies (sp?) Kiffels
and Nut rolls found at every holiday table. -Knoebles - from the
wakey white footbath to my 1st leap off third tower into underwater
Elvis. Snagging the "brass ring" on merry-go-round just after dusk
when the lights seemed brighter than life. -The taste and texture
of Martz's bittersweet chocolate chip ice cream and my first lick of
Teaberry ice cream (always packed 1/3 above top of quart box and
then covered with wax paper). -My cousin Crazy Mary's obsession
with collecting Mallow Cup coupons to buy more Mallow Cups (with
more coupons) that she stored in the freezer. -F&S beer -
lovingly referred to by my Aunt "Hancha" as Fartin & Sh__ - the
beer, the bottle, the label and the ugly two-day hangovers. -My
dad, with a slight buzz on, playing flawless pinochle hands
-regardless of the cards- while eating his favorite "snack"- a thick
slice of smoked ham on a piece of freshly cut nut roll- washed down
with a 8 oz "beer clean" glass of Fuhrman and Schmitt. -Pinochle
games in my Aunt Verna's kitchen table in mid-winter. We had to
rotate chairs every other hand to avoid infrared burns from the
corner coal stove that heated the entire row house. -The sounds
smell of burning coal. Have a tri-fuel furnace in New England house
and burn a ton and a half or shiny black anthracite every
winter. -The way a relative or friend never knock by yelled you
name in a tri-cadance "Yo-Bill-E". Your website is deserving
tribute on the amazing rich seams of solid values, great food and
lasting bonds that emerge from the sacred land of "hard
coal".-Congrats and many, many thanks to you all.

New Book Published One of Shenandoah's own has published a
book, "Intersect on the Media Information Highway." Jack Hobbs,
former resident of Shenandoah, PA. book is currently available from
Barnes & Noble ( www.bn.com) or from another web site (
www.iuniverse.com). You can get a look at it on either
website. Just type in the word "intersect" in the search title
section and it will appear. There are Shenandoah stories from
the thirties and forties. During that same period there are
also recollections by the co-authors about China and Japan.
This autobiography is distinguished from other autobiographies
in that it is a trilogy involving two other persons born during the
same year. One is from China; the other from Japan. All three
intersected late in life as a result of media careers. This may be
one of the first attempts (if not the first) of an "autobiographical
trilogy". There are reviews published on the websites
(iuniverse.com is most complete) and they provide an accurate
description of the book as well as opinions from third-parties.

Two remembrances... 1. Does anyone remember the old
WHUM-TV channel 61? It was licensed to Summit Station and supposed

alleys in the area? The recent reopening of the lanes at the Ashland
