| My great-grandparents settled in Glen Lyon, Luzerne about
1880. I know the story very well about the movie Miracle of the
Bells filmed there. My grandfather carved the wooden statues in St.
Adalbert's church there. Only in the movie they were made of stone!
The movie encouraged my grandmother to talk about Glen Lyon and
people there - some of whom were represented in the movie in some
small way. About 20 years ago I visited the cemetery in Glen Lyon to
find my great-grandparents graves, and also found (thanks to a woman
tending a nearby grave) the one of the movie star who came back to
Glen Lyon to be buried (I hope I have the movie straight in my mind
- it's been over 50 years).

I have enjoyed this site for the past two hours... My mom
grew up in Upper Lehigh and my pop-pop was a coal miner, there also.
My mom went to Foster Township h.s. in Freeland. I long for the days
of walking to the Huge Breaker that was in the back of my mom-mom's
house and to eat food prepared on a coal stove. We make a few trips
a year..and always go to Knotty Pine...Have for 42years....plus all
the years my mom had before me This is a wonderful real life
site and I am so glad I stumbled to it... Actually today, my husband
and two sons and I were in Ashland and Centralia (of course all this
after...Knoebels) and I felt a rush of meloncoly...and felt as
though I was longing to be 5 again, to sit on my pop-pop's lap and
listen to him sing songs from the mine......I can't wait to have my
mom read the coal speak....love it!!!!! My mom's maiden name:
KUSHNERICK , BETTY

| When I moved to Omaha, I was surprised to learn that I had an
"east coast accent". I lived in South Florida in my teenage years,
but since the Boynton Beach area consists of a bunch of transplanted
northerners, no one thought I spoke with an accent. I can't get over
the fact that people out here have never had pierogies, don't know
the difference between halushki and halupki (or what the hell it
is), have no idea what to make of Senapes Pitza or Jimmy Dogs, have
never had pizza that didn't come from a chain restaurant and never
seen a piece of coal. I get strange looks every time "you'se guys"
comes out of my mouth and ordering a slice and a tea isn't as easy.
Northeast PA may not be perfect, but my roots are firmly planted in
the Pokes...and I'll have coal in my soul for as long as I live.
