| Looking forward to making the trip to see my mom in Kulpmont
this weekend. It might be a long time until my older son sees his
grammam again, he's moving out west. I don't get up there as much as
I would like to because of my work. We've tried to get mom to move
closer to us but there's no use trying. She'll always be a coal
cracker! Even though I graduated from OLOL "75" I still follow Mt.
Carmel football. The people down here don't know dedicated high
school football fans like Mt. Carmel fans! I hope to get to see them
play in states.

I am searching for any guidance on my ancestors who landed in
the coal fields of Centralia PA. The 1900 census shows a large clan
of Gaughans emigrated in 1884 to Centralia and neighboring village
Byrnesville. I believe a good portion of this brood is as
follows: Anthony and Mary (Wilson) Gaughan (born 1840 &
1853) Patrick and Julia (Dixon) Gaughan (born ____ &
1838) Edward and Rose Gaughan (born 1849 & 1849) Dennis
Gaughan? Michael and Hanna Gaughan (born 1854 &
1856) William Gaughan (born about 1850s) Patrick and Honora
Gaughan (born 1848 & 1851) Mary (Gaughan?) Ruddy (born about
1845) Bridget (Gaughan?) Barrett (born about 1845) I suspect
that most of these are siblings. I know for sure that Anthony is
the son of Anthony and Mary Gaughan. The hard part is the loss
of the 1890 census! This brood was in the US for 16 years before
they showed up on any census. I have not been able to trace what
ship they arrived on, and can find nothing on them until 1900 (with
the exception of marriage and birth records). Can anyone direct me
on better ways to trace their
paths? ------------------------- Now Anthony Gaughan and Mary
Wilson Gaughan's clan includes the following children: Mary
Gaughan Gillespie (born about 1865 - 68) Honoria (Nora) Gaughan
(born 1865) (married either Fallen or McIntyre) Anthony J.
Gaughan (born about 1873) Ann Gaughan Byrnes (born about
1873) James Gaughan (born about 1875) Patrick Gaughan (born
about 1878) Philip Gaughan (born about 1879) Catherine Gaughan
Monahan (born about 1881) Margaret Gaughan Laughlin (born about
1882) Anthony and Mary had a total of 11 children. I suspect this
may be their child: Bridget Gaughan McAndrew (born about
1866) Their son, Anthony Joseph, is my great grandfather. He
married Ellen A. Daley, of Centralia, and had six
children: Anthony J. Gaughan (born 1897) Sarah Gaughan Smolke
Harris (born 1899) Owen Gaughan (born 1902) Philip Gaughan
(born 1906) Joseph O. Gaughan (born 1909) Mary "Mamie" Gaughan
Tyson (born 1913) Joseph Owen Gaughan married Esther Rita
Dropesky, of Mount Carmel PA, and had 5 children: Anthony J.
Gaughan (born 1929) Virginia Gaughan Reilly (born 1930) Donald
P. Gaughan (born 1932) Joleen Gaughan Yokemick (born
1936) Raymond J. Gaughan (born
1943) ------------------------------ If you have any info that
can help me, primarily regarding the older generations, I look
forward to hearing from you. Thank you! Eileen Cizewski

| My favorite memories take me back to the Bavarian Summer
festivals in Barnesville, PA. My parents were from Poland but I
always admired the German People and did what ever I could to get to
any German festival or event in Pennsylvania. What I love about them
is their ability to work real hard and serious during the week, and
then turn around on the weekends and party, celebrate and cook good
food just as hard. The most beautiful German,Austrian, and Swiss
girls could always be found there and they could dance great. Now I
live in Cape Coral, Florida home to over 100,000 Germans and I'm
having a great time each weekend at the Cape Coral German-American
Club. They have great Polka every weekend with 2,000 members. But I
will always remember my days in Barnesville at Woodlake Park.

If you'd lke to read an Ode let me know. I've written An
Ode to Anthracite. What IS an ODE anyway? Odes often defy
definition, but frequently an Ode is a song of praise, adulation
almost. Sometimes joyous, sometimes sullen. I'm fairly certain that
an Ode may be defined as a remembrance.

| I visited my boy-hood town of Shenandoah recently. The party
of four cousins from Connecticut had lunch at the Lyric Restaurant.
We visited our parents and grand-parents and extended family in St.
Stephen's Cemetery. Looking down the mountain into Shenandoah from
the Heights - I could see the Reading Railroad Steam Camel-Back
Locomotive puffing up the tracks with its Bobber Caboose - and in
view the Lehigh Valley two steam Locomotives in front pulling 35
Hopper Cars of coal with three Locomotives in the rear pushing the
train up the grade onto Yatesville and distance Delano. And yes, the
Lehigh Valley Doodle Bug Gasoline Powered Pasenger car pulling into
the Lehigh Valley Station. And in the far distance two Pennsylvanis
Steam Locomotives and their Slope-Back Tenders hauling 15 Hopper
Cars of coal from William Penn colliery. And the whistle ...the
whistle echoing...across the mountains of the Henry Clay Narrow
Guage Steam Locomotive hauling 15 Mine Cars of coal past the Heaven
Bank and the Eagle Rocks into Shenandoah City Breaker. And in a
second I closed my eyes - and then it was all gone - the whistle -
the wonderful memories of a 14-year old lad - you can never go home
again - only in your memories of the trains chugging in Shenandoah.
Amen!
