Hi. My Grandfather, Stephen Patrick was a miner in the Lacawana coal mines of Scranton, Pennsylvania. The city opened up those mines for public viewing and let me tell you, it would bring tears to your eyes to see the conditions that those men worked under. If you're ever in Scranton, take the tour..and be sure to bring a jacket cuz it's damp and very cold down there...even on a hot summer day. God love all those poor souls who had to labor so hard to make such measely pay.

I came across this site very much by accident. But I'm very glad I did.I'll probably be spending a lot of time looking over messages from all the people who wrote.
I was on a sort of memory kick and was searching for any material on the old Lakewood Amusement Park in Barnsville. That's how this site option turned up.I was born and raised in Hazleton where my father, for a good part of his life, was a projectionist at the Capitol Movie Theater.I graduated from Hazleton High School in 1960 and was already at work as a radio DJ at that time.
The station,WTHT (later WHZN) no longer exists.
I was also very active in Civil Defense as a
member of the Ground Observer Corp. I wonder how many of you remember that? My interest in Lakewood
stems from the fact that I took my girl (now my
wife) to the playhouse that use to be located there on our first date.I'm really enjoyed reading memories of 'Coal Country' because I've covered the majority of commnities mentioned in
these messages as a Television News reporter for
WYOU TV based in Scranton.I've enjoyed hotdogs at
Jimmy's in Hazleton as well as "The Squeez In" in
Sunbury.Knoebels Amusement Park is still a favorite stop several times each summer. There's a hogie named after me at a Deli in Shamokin (the
walls there are literally covered with deli treats named after different people).I can't think of the name of the place just now but its about a block and a half away from the Coal Township Municipal Building. I've covered many stories in Centralia..some when there were
a lot more people around and still enjoy taking the family and friends for rides to Lewisburg,Sunbury,Bloomsburg,Berwick and the like.
I even worked in Berwick for about a year at what was then WBRX Radio. One of the best towns I've ever worked in because of the nice people.
I'll probably log back in another time with some specific memories.Great to know the site is here.
It goes on my 'Favorite List" right now.

I am the son of a coal miner who worked for 50 years at the Nottingham Colliery in Plymouth, Pennsylvania. The colliery is now defunct as is the whole coal mining regeon in Northeast Pennsylvania. I never thought once about becoming a miner since my father took me to the mouth of the shaft. I looked down and immediately thought to myself, "That's not for me."

First off, this site is great! I'd like to let everyone know that there are some pretty cool little patch towns in the far Northern tip of Schuylkill County (where I grew up). McAdoo, Kelayres, Haddock, Lofty, Silverbrook, Barnsville, Grier City & Delano. I just thought I'd put in a good word for these towns, so no one forgets about them. By the way, anyone ever hear of "stove rags"? It's an old favorite of mine!

My gratitude to those who put together this site; it has conjured up many precious memories. I've lived in and traveled to many places since I graduated from Tamaqua High in 96, and still I feel a tingle down my spine when driving north from Philly, I see those rolling hills begin to rise up in the distance. Hey, does anyone out there remember Lenny formerly of Long John Silver's Schuylkill Mall now at the Cressona location (I believe)? What a comfort it was over the course of some 15 years to always walk into the place and see him there, lovingly wiping off malt vinegar bottles or spraying that blue stuff on the tables. He is a Coal Region Icon for those of us "South of the Mountain". God bless all you Coal Crackers.
