Comments: Thank you for one fantastic site! I am from Shamokin and reside in Harrisburg since 1990 but plan to be back up home in the near future. I am a Shamokin High grad of 1967. I began dabbling with creating a web site two weeks ago and subsequently created a prot model fro high scoll wrestling scores in the coal region since 1-24-98. I have been posting and still do post these scores to Tom Elling's official PENNSYLVANIA WRESTLING site and Danny Harris' official District 2 site out of Wilkes Barre; I can send you both ur's if you wish or you can link them from my site and mention me if you e-mail Tom or Danny. i LOVE your site and enjoy it immensley and visit daily. My site may remain open all off season or i may close it down for the off season, I am unsure as of right now. Thanks again and best wishes! :) Respectfully yours, Mark J. Gerrity - Shamokin, PA

Comments: I'm from Hazleton and tune into the Standard-Speaker online when I can. Saw the article on CoalSpeak today and laughed, it was great. Everyone can always tell when I've visited Hazleton by how fast I talk, how my voice inflects, and how I use the word you's (how are you's?). There is a definite accent in our area and I miss hearing it everyday! Best wishes with your homepage.

Comments: My family roots are from Shendo and so are many of my childhood memories. Going "up town", "up the back", to the bazaars for bleenies and piling into my grandfather's Rambler to go get milk at Geirhart's (hope the spelling is correct) farm in Ringtown. Those were the days and the best memories of holidays, that will never be reproduced, at my grandparents' home (West Washington Street). I don't visit to often, but when I do, kielbasi and kiska are a must for myself and friends.

Comments: My grandfather, Joseph Camloh, worked in the coal mines near Luzerne, PA, for 40+ years. Though he passed away when I was just 6 years old (in 1969), my father, his only surviving son, continues to tell us stories of his father to this day. My maternal grandfather, Joseph Laufer, was a coal dealer in the Wilkes-Barre and surrounding areas for 30+ years. He retired from that vocation in the early 70's; he passed away in 1982. Having become old enough to really get to know him, I have many stories of his endeavors as well.

We're working on the Phonological Atlas of North America, which is the first national study of American pronunciation. (The Atlas is linked with my home page). We'll be studying Pennsylvania closely in the next couple of years, and very much appreciate the info in the Coal Speak Dictionary. Several years ago, Ruth Herold completed a dissertation about Eastern Pennsylvania that showed that one particular change in pronunciation was closely tied to the coal-mining towns and cities. This change leads to two whole sets of words being pronounced the same: DON and DAWN, HOCK and HAWK, ODD and AWED. Myself, I was born in North Jersey, in Rutherford.

I am originally from Grier City (just outside Barnesville) and a 1971 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School. I still love dishes like bleenies, pierogies, and hulupkies. I also visit the area about three times a year. My parents, brother and family as well as other relatives still live there. Even though I've lost most of my accent, there are certain phrases that will be a part of me forever.....people still point them out!

Comments: I found your fun Web site thanks to Debbie Pastuzak. I'm 63 now, and the happiest were the first 14, growing up in Shamokin. We had fun. One pastime was playing with carbide cannons. When the bootleggers weren't working their mines, we used to steal their carbide. We would take a Crisco can and put a small hole in the floor of the can. Then we would throw a handfull of carbide into the can with some water and let the mixture "cook" for a while. We'd lite a match to the hole and usually a hell of an explosion would follow. In the summer we'd swim in mud holes and strip mines when we were broke. If we had some money we'd stand on the bridge near the Cameron Collery and hitch hike down to Knobles, or we'd go to the Edgewood Park pool. I'd give anything to relive those years again. Your Web site brought back many happy memories. Thanks.

Comments: Wanted to share just a bit of our history from the coalfields. My Grandmother, on my father's side, grew up in Ashley/Hanover Township, just south of Wilkes-Barre. They lived in a double block (a townhouse of two) with her grandparents. Her grandfather worked for the railroad, and during WWI, had to make a run on Christmas Day. Hey, the war got won by such sacrifices...24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to fuel the war effort. Well, probably because of the holiday, and inexperience covering for those who wanted off, two trains kinda got onto the same track, in different directions. In the ensuing crash, my great grandfather, the "fireman" (he fed coal into the boiler to power the locomotive) was thrown into the firebox. In those days, you laid out your dead in the living room. I imagine it was a closed casket, but Gram, all of 11 years old at the time, remembered she couldn't tolerate the smell, even on the other side of the home, and went to stay with relatives until it was over. Many people have spoken of the rich diversity of the region. Maybe by our time growing up, such was the case, but at the time, ethnic hatreds were strong, and competition was fierce. Think of all the churches in the coalfields, each of them a different ethnicity...competing to build bigger and better altars to honor their God...and show up them (fill-in-the-blank). The reason certain areas were enclaves of certain ethnic groups wasn't by choice but by necessity. Ellis Islanders were hustled along until they found "their own kind". They weren't welcome anywhere else. It was a harsh life, a hard life, a rude life. My husband's grandfather was killed in the mines when his father was a young child. He and his older sister were orphaned when their mother died 6 months later..."of a broken heart". The probable reality was she worked and worried herself to death trying to take care of her kids, in an area where there were no jobs for women. I keep hearing Tenessee Ernie Ford's "Company Store" in my mind here. The father's mother, the German Grossmutter, and the father's youngest brother, all of 18, teamed up to raise the children, because you didn't let "your own" go to an orphanage, and there was no shortage of orphans... You took care of your own. Maybe one of the prouder legacies of the coalfields. Should I chat about my own Grandmother, an Irish lady from the Bronx (NY) who found her beloved seafaring husband was actually a bigamist? He jumped on a ship out of harbour; she couldn't earn enough to feed her children (we're talking the Great depression here) so she came down to Berwick, PA, to find his family and try to find a way to take care of her kids. And ended up giving one up for adoption at the tender age of 6 or 7, because she couldn't afford to feed them both. The boy, a bit older, could work. No child labor laws then. We don't realize, when we complain about this great nation of ours, just how hard life can be. We've grown up expecting to be taken care of when things hit a bump in the road. If we look at our heritage, we can appreciate just how good our world really is, and realize how far we have come. There is heartbreak all over the coalfields. The dust may be black, but it was tinged with blood. Hey, thanks for listening. Tanstaafl

Comments: This is to the person who wanted to know more about the curse. This is about the curse of "Centralia". I remember some of the basic curse. I can get the full details when I visit my grandmother. Somehow, children of a miner were forbidden to take food without permission from the parents.I believe they were severely punished by their mother. She supposedly put their hands on the hot coal stove for stealing. The children were severely burned. Sometime afterward that evening, a fever fell on the mother.(due to guilt and remorse)The husband claimed the mother was possessed or something. While she was in this trance she spoke of a curse,of FIRE, on all of the people in the town. (I don't know all of the story,if you are interested I can get more of the details)

Comments: Shenandoah, I am a frequent viewer, does anyone know where I might find Robert Carrol, Lewis Walters, Thomas Conners, George Nader all from Shenandoah and would have graduated in 1956. I also think Art Lewis from Mahanoy City, as well as my Dad (Tom Barrett) belong in the famous people list. I enjoy this web site more than any other on the net. I made my own Boilo this year from your coalstove and it was better than the stuff I was making from memory all these years. Thanks Tom

Enjoyed your guestlist and Coalspeak, You missed a good word..Dupa (kinder and gentler term for rear end A--. "Watta Dupa... Sit on your dupa till your father gets home.. After living away from the Panther Valley for a number of years my wife and I visited New York City and looked up an old service buddy. We were walking down Fifth Ave. when someone from Lansord walked toward us and yelled a big "Hello, how are you?" My freind from the city almost fell over, he could not get over the fact that we were visitors to the city and someone actually spoke to us... I guess that is what it means to be a Coal Cracker... .

Comments: I really like your page!! It's so good to see our heritage kept alive. I'm from Danville, and although we don't have any coal there, it was the coal from Shamokin that made my town such an important part of the iron industry in America. I've learned a lot about life from talkibng to miners, for they are as real as people can get. Last summer I marched with miners and families of miners at Lattimer. As I marched with my banjo singing "which side are you on" I finally realized how important the miner is in making our country what it is today. Not just the coal industry but the individual miner. Thanks for keeping their story ALIVE!!!! Van Wagner

Lorraine, my fiancee, was a classmate of yours in EE. Lorraine always wondered what happened to you because she couldn't find you after 1982. How are you doing? Where are you working? My bruder Jake and I lived up in Hazleton and I'll always remember the burning coal banks just outside Tamaqua. Who remembers the "Humpty-Dumpty" sandwich special (turkey and mashed potatoes, smoothered in gravy) at the Howard Johnson's in Hometown? How many of yus guys climbed the coal banks after school or carried an old refrigerator box up to the top and just sat in it to feel good? huh? See yus down da Pines!
