Chendoah makes Tamaqua look sophisticated. And what about lovely McAdoo? Any good ole' boy from the Tamaqua Area knows what you can get by driving through McAdoo and simply hanging a quart out the window! What's with that Rusnak dude submitting a billion things to the Guestbook? And watch out for that Bill Lebo guy, he's trouble. And one more thing, in Chendoad da**** they say 'tree' instead of 'three.' Ex: I'm tirty tree years old da****, whats it to ya? |

I think that is what I miss most. The variety of foods. How many different types of pizza can you remember? Berwick had at least 7 distinctly different pizza parlors and this was before franchises. Tuzzi's on Washington had pizza 3 inches thick! It was right across from the weaving mill where I worked and dreamed of what California could possibly be like. My grandfather went to work underground in 1905 at the age of 14 and worked underground until 1953. My other grandfather did almost the same in the carpet mill. They couldn't understand why I would consider leaving, even if it was just to check it out. |

I am doing some family history research and would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may have known of, or still have photos, taken by the Anthony Gromalski Photo Studio from Mahanoy City. It was located in the 200 block of East Center Street in the 1920's and 1930's. I'd love to see any photos. |

Name: Paul J. Horn Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Woodbridge, VA Time: 1998-03-09 21:45:24 Comments: I grew up in Brach Township, about halfway between Minersville and Llewellyn(sp?). Graduated from Nativiy in 1965. Really enjoyed your site. It sure brought back the memories. Here's one for your dictionary: plickee - a short (less that 1/2 inch) given to boys for the summer. NOt to be confused with the flattop as this was not brushed to make it stand up. |

Name: Paula Website: Referred by: Other From: San Mateo, CA Time: 1998-03-09 15:44:50 Comments: I'm originally from the Pittsburgh area but graduated from high school in Bloomsburg, PA and went to Penn State. Bloomsburg is just on the edge of the "rejin" but connects in many ways. We had many student teachers from Bloomsburg U who were genuine crackers, we went to Knoebel's Grove, called green peppers "mangos", ate city chicken, etc. Quite a lot of the "coalspeak" is common to the steel mill-soft coal region surrounding Pittsburgh. Thanks for a chuckle and some memories. |

They are brudder (brother); payment (sidewalk or pavement); chimley (chimney). I'm sure your list will continue to expand. We enjoy your pages. Lil Junas. |

Name: Suzanne Yenchko Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Lemoyne, PA Time: 1998-03-08 18:14:58 Comments: I'm from Hazleton, HHS Class of 1964. There are still a good number of Yenchko's in Hazleton so I get back there with some frequency. It was a good place to come from. The people from the coal region have a "bond" since we all grew up in similar circumstances. I'd like to see the region upgraded in terms of getting into the hight tech stream, but I'd also like to see historic buildings in each of the towns preserved. Too many places all look alike with nothing distinctive about them. |

Name: Jack Edwards Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Houston Time: 1998-03-07 14:37:37 Comments: Here is anothern, by Jeez! Last night I said, "Who needs a beer?" and my wife said, "I'll have anothern!" Now her ancestry is of the Kentucky variety of coal miners, but her father worked for Redman Homes in Hazleton and that is how we met. So, I'm not quite sure where that kind of talk actually came from. The mountain that runs along the east bank of the Susquehanna separates the coal crackers from the farmers. The culture of the farmers and mill workers that inhabit the western side of the Susquehanna is influenced by Dutchmen, I believe. Coal Crackers don't eat panhas (scrapple), do they? Hey, remember back when all the girls in Berwick, and Hazleton too for that matter, were named Angela? |

My wife and I decided to check out the site right away and were pleasently surprised at what we found. Monica nearly fell on the floor laughing when she started reading coal speak. We really were glad to get the recipes since we always enjoy the ethnic foods of the area and going to the block parties especially St. Mary's. Monica was born in Trenton patch and I was born and raised in Quakake. |

Name: Judy A. Radano Website: Referred by: NewspaperArticle From: Malvern, PA Time: 1998-03-04 10:38:47 Comments: I spent my early childhood in Mt. Carmel, then moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia at age 11. Still, my parents could not stay away and we made twice or thrice-monthly trips "home" for years. My parents retired and promptly moved back to the town and the very same block where my mother and her ten brothers and sister were born and raised (in a tiny house, I might add). I printed out a copy of the coalspeak dictionary and laugh every time I read it. |

Most of my friends think I'm making that one up. This is great. POSSIBLE ADDITIONS: We always pronounced ASHLAND as ASHLAN, the D is silent. When I was growing up no one had living rooms, we all had PARLORS. ROCKTOWN- Lavelle (South of Locustdale.) My dad (from Homesville) had an expression. "YOUR AS FULL OF SH** AS A ROCKTOWN GOOSE." Don't ask me where this came from. COMPNY HOUSE - Any of the many row houses owned by the READING Company. Keep up the good work!! |

Name: Eileen Casey Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Newark, Delaware Time: 1998-03-01 18:18:00 Comments: Hailing from Wilkes-Barre, where some of my family still lives,I have been enjoying as well as sharing this gem of a find with all who I know will appreciate it. There is actually a "Coal Crackers' Reunion held annually here in Wilmington for all of us displaced crackers. Thank you (I think) for including my grandmother's favorite, HEYNA. We also seem to have the propensity to follow our questions with "...or no?", as in "Youse guys tappin down da shootin gallery tanite, or no?" I was also pleased to see MANGO included. My dear departed dad used to affectionately refer to Italians as "mango snappers". I thank you for honoring both of these members of my family with these inclusions! Fortunately, I do get back to The Valley With the Heart often enough to enjoy a CMP sundae. |
