Brought back some memories of how hard our ancestors from Eastern Europe worked to "Make it" in this great country of ours. My mom still tells me stories of how her Polish speaking parents had a cow on Second street in Wyoming, sold the milk (and butter) to make money for winter clothes. Funny how none of the neighbors complained. My mom would drive my "Bobchie" to Wilkes Barre to go shopping when she was THIRTEEN. Neither one of them had a driver's license, but my grandmother said if they got pulled over, she would talk to the cop (she couldn't speak English). Any stories anyone else would like to share, I would like to hear them. Drop me a line, Hainuh or no! |

Name: Tom Yezerski Website: Referred by: Word of MouthÊ From: Rutherford, NJ Time: 1998-04-15 12:34:34 Comments: I thought you afficionados of the coal regions would be interested in a children's book about the history of the area. It's called "Together In Pinecone Patch," it just came out, and I wrote and illustrated it. It's about Keara Buckley and Stefan Pazik, two children who immigrate to a Pennsylvania coal-mining town from Ireland and Poland, respectively, during the 1880's. The kids inherit their families' prejudices and consequently dislike each other, but, over time, they come to understand they are more alike than different. I did my research at the Eckley Miner's Village and at the Scranton Anthracite Heritage Museum. My Dad and Mom, Polish and Irish, grew up and married in Shamokin, so I know whereof I speak. This story will remind you and your kids what our families went through. You can find the book at your bookstore or at Amazon.com. |

Name: Cindi Garringer (nee Schickley) Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Mt. Vernon, Missouri Time: 1998-04-10 16:00:53 Comments: Well it's about time I find a really intelligent page on the net! I grew up in Mount Carmel, living at 35 South Maple Street. I WILL someday come back to the coal region! I adored living there. Does anyone out there remember the Lions Club Block party they would have every year on Third Street between Oak and Maple. Lots of good memories there! My grandfather always told me that the mine fires between Centralia and Mount Carmel were really where hell was! He spent a large part of his life in those mines around Mt. Carmel, Locust Gap, and Shamokin so it may have been hell to him as well. I have a deep respect for the people who long ago made the coal region their home and gave it the life it had. Only now do I have a grasp of the diversity and culture of the people that have come before me. My own ancestors as well as all the others. To bad the younger people of today do not always understand the richness that coal gave to this region and coal WAS king! |

In those years Shamokenits got all dressed up in their Sunday best and parade back and forth on Independence Street ala 5th Avenue, New York. Me and my sixth grade buddies from St. Stan's were just starting to notice how attractive girls were and we spent the afternoon harassing them. So that I would look my best, I remember buying one of those "cheap" rings that could be adjusted to fit any finger. After one afternoon's wear it turned my finger green. So much for trying to look your best. |

By the time they had grown, they all had names and were pets! If you ever got over to Bloom at Eastertime you had to see all the chocolate castings that came from Spiros Marinos collection of vintage molds in the front window of the Waffle Grill. Name: Nancy Sanner Lord Cerullo Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Santa Clara, CA Time: 1998-04-07 21:42:24 Comments: Born in Philly, moved to Pottsville at age 2. Family had Rennas Hotel (Sanner spelled backward) at Center & Arch. Also family had Sanner hardware stores in the coal region. Dad, "Rosie" was the business manager of the Pottsville Maroons, Mother was Miss Pottsville in the 1921 Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. She rode in the parade on the Boardwalk in a huge coal bucket filled with coal, pulled by miners. Brother Lynn Sanner was the ABC sports announcer for the Denver Broncos. I would like to hear from my old buds, from PHS Class of '47. Enjoyed the video of the reunion. Saw it with Norma Eber and her husband Jim Lightcap and Helen Jones Strong. Also, miss the gang on top of Race Street! |

Name: Trudy Barna-Lloyd Website: Referred by: Other From: San Jacinto County, Texas Time: 1998-04-01 22:20:36 Comments: My father, Theodore Barna, was born to Andrew Barna and Anna Deliman Barna in Port Reading, N.J., the terminus of the Reading Railroad via which a lot of all that coal was shipped to the coal docks for transshipping to New York. My grandfather worked as a carpenter and fixed the barges into which coal was dumped from the RR cars. So I feel a certain affinity to you "coal crackers." My Barna relatives still live mostly in New Jersey; my Deliman relatives may be mostly in Pennsylvania. I think they must all have a little coal dust in their hearts. |

Name: Charles Petchel Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Brussels, Belgium Time: 1998-04-01 03:30:00 Comments: I was Born and raised in Swoyersville, PA, the culture capital of the anthracite redgion, where people never say a discouraging word. Where neighbor loves neighbor. Oh, I miss those days of picking coal and cracking that diamond like antrhacite chunks that fell from the strip mining "steam" shovel. It was a family affair, aunts, uncles, cousins, such togetherness. Has anyone checked out the history of Swoyersville, and Luzern County? at: --- http://www.rootsweb.com/~panepags/patk/patk.htm --- I miss the gentle days of Swoyersville High where intellectual persuits rode over all other goals. Those long discussions on Sartre and Kirkagaard. Yes I guess we were pre hippies! Oh, those days and all those exploring Slavic minds searching for truth, reading literature rich with our future worlds, with no coal mine job to go to (our generation was fooled), without the comraderie of the mines, we missed out on spending our lives in the mines, snuggling up with the dirty pleasure of coal dust, huddling in beer gardens, staggering home drunk to our wives, when the mines were idle, and then collecting our goverment money when we got our bad lung certificates after 40 for early retirement. What did we miss! |
