I'd escaped for 12 years and lived in CA, then they found me and forced me to return. But they can't keep me here forever, two years and I've done my time, and I'll be heading west. No one believes that people talk like that here, my son is even starting to pick it up. It's a scary thought. You did forget to mention that Shenandoah is the home now of not only the International Headquarters of Mrs. T's Pierogies, but also the infamous Miner's Memorial, featuring a two thousand lb hunk of coal. Yep, we're becoming quite the metro. When Fran Rooney showed this to me, I hit the floor and nearly choked, it is so factual. This is great!!!!! Pecky |

Went to NS High School where I played baseball. I am in the military and have been for over 20 years now. When I found the coalspeak page I laughed for hours and realized that I still have a little of it in me. Only this year did I find some MRS T's perogies since I left the region. Still have not found tastykakes! I miss mattucci's pizza (in Mt. Carmel), the fireworks and the dairy where you got huge icream cones (both in Gordon) |

Name: Andrew M Stewart Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, UK Time: 1998-05-25 18:03:43 Comments: Greetings from England on a warm cloudy day. I found your site absolutely fascinating and will return at a more sensible hour. Co-incidentally was watching "Brassed Off" last night - a black comedy film about the destruction of english coal fields by Margaret Thatcher in the name of progress. If you can hack the accents it is very worth watching. Am in pursuit of the derivation of the word 'brogue'. I think the meaning of 'boot' and 'accent' are not connected. The shoe version derives from the Irish Broc for shoe circa C16 whereas Brogue as in accent is more recent C18. Anyway thanks for an informative and funny 45 minutes and keep up the good work. As to where I'm from - I now live in Rickmansworth which is on the NW of London about 15 miles from the centre. I can track my family in an almost direct line back to 1300 initially Scotland, then Ireland, then New Zealand, Australia & South Africa, then at the beginning of this century England and finally a branch to Seattle in your part of the world. |

Lived in a red brick house on Shamokin St. catty corner from the old Grant School. Attended St. Stan's and graduated from the 8th grade in June 1949. Favorite passtimes in winter were sled ridding down Carney's Hill (Webster St.), balancing a pin ball machine on your toes to win free games at Charlie Lenker's store (Pearl St.), buying single cigarettes for a penny at Schicatannos store (Franklin St.), ridding a sled while hanging onto the rear bumper of the Shamokin/Coal Township bus, going on Boy Scout hikes to the fire tower and Shamokin Airport. In the summer, swimming in the peanut, coon's well, maderas, Edgewood, Knobles and the Susquehanna river near Catawissa, skunking on the dirt road between the south end of Shamokin St. and the Big Mountain patch. Anytime, sneaking into the Majestic (Bug House), Capitol or Vikky. God!!! those were great times. Thanks for letting me reminisce. Great site. |
