Comments: I visit the Guestbook often and read the comments with interest. I especially like Jack Edward's comments. His picture of the burning culm bank brought back memories of when I was a kid growing up in Shamokin in the 40s. Shamokin was half surrounded by culm banks. They were big, black and ugly. A great place for a kid to play. I remember thinking that I was going to grow up, be rich and use my money to clean up the scenery. Well, here it is 50 years later. I grew up, but I'm not rich and haven't been able to follow up on my childhood dreaming. But a strange thing happened with the passage of time - nature and new technology took care of hiding the culm banks. They are all covered with trees, or gone, and soon, one will not even know they are/were there. I used to swim in mud holes south of Shamokin near the Reading Railroad. I took a hike recently to revisit those mudholes. I almost couldn't recognize the route. In the 40s, the railroad paralleled the Shamokin Creek and there was a huge culm bank west of the creek. Now, trees have grown up along the bank of the creek, so thick that you almost can't see the creek. And the culm bank is gone. I mean that mountain of big black rocks and slate is gone. I believe, the local coal guys shipped it off to burn in electric generating plants. Thank you Jack for triggering this comment and thank you creator's of this neat Web site for letting an old Coal Cracker like me to reminisce.

Comments: Check out this picture. Does anyone remember this burning culm bank? The view is from the top of the hill in Sheatown near Leo Mayewski's Tavern (Markiewicz's?). You are looking back toward the Susquehanna River, Nanticoke is to the right. This picture was taken in the early 50's.

Comments: Pottsville, Jalappa, PHS '51. Become a regular coalregion junkie. Everyone who's left sounds homesick. Maybe through this site a massuve Woodstock style reunion could be organized, like Summer of 2000, where say July 4th week everyone who's ever left returnsto a Coalregion size BLOCKBUSTER BLOCKPARTY.

Comments: Its about time someone put the coal region on the map. Now the world will know where some of the best people in the world grew up. I'm a graduate of the Class of 66 of St. Clair High School. No school buses....walked to school from Arnots Addition via the "short cut" to school. Stopped along the way to jump a train on the railroad tracks (now route 61). Evenings were spent with the "Arnots Boys" at Erdocks Store on Cherry Street. Summertime had the pickup baseball games at the Amvets Field in Arnots. Tell one or two guys and the next day you had two full teams. In the mid 50's I went to school at the old "New Castle Twp." School in Arnots Addition (now torn down). Remember the good old teachers...Mrs. Burke, Mr. Love, Mrs. Williams & Mr. Kovich. At lunch time we would go down the corner to Scanlan's store and buy candy or up the street to Christian's Store. Oh, the good old days. Visit my web site above, it may be of interest to you. Len

Comments: Great Site! One of the characteristics of the Coal Region that you've omitted here is the propensity to assign handles to almost everyone. Here are a few that I can remember. Please forgive the vulgarity of some of these terms, but it's real life. There was Vulture, Howdy Doody, Banana Nose, Tampon Stick, Baby Huey, Hitch'n Harry, Gravel Gertie, Shamokin, Scorch, Nutty Buddy, Big Winnie, Joe Bags, Crack, Truck, Earsy, Alley Oop (aka Becky Boop), Shit Lips, Canary, Bertie the Bunyip, Pitch, Abbadab, Scar, Hambone and last but not least Muff Diver (aka MD or Doc). If anyone can remember others, please advise. Later.
