Names in my maternal family genealogy include: Richards, Severn, Goeringer, Schmidt, Mong (sp??? possibly Mung). I'd welcome any info on any of these. *** My grandfather, Hayden J. Richards, was supposed to work in the coal mines as a young boy. He worked there for one day! He just couldn't take the idea of being closed in with nowhere to go. Can't say as I blame him.

Comments: I am a collector of beer serving trays, brewery advertising and signs, primarily from the Coal Regions. Major interest in F&S, Kaier's Yuengling's, Mount Carbon etc. My grandmother immigrated from Ukraine to Shamokin where she was employed as a "bottle washer" at the Furhmann and Schmidt Brewery. Are there any pictures of the F&S Brewery bottle washers at work in any archives. I'd be very interested!

Comments: Hi, just returned from a multiyear Shen. Catholic High School reunion (classes of 51 through 57 and others). It was a blast, held in Hazelton at Genettis. We had about 200 people and the class of '53 has to be thanked for letting all of us in on it. My wife & I saw the Shen. Valley (40) - Upper Dauphin (13) game and hope the rest of the season goes as well. Looking forward to next September for the classes getting together in Wildwood NJ. Go Blue Devils. Thanks again Chalu!

Comments: Here is something I learned from y'all, hanging around service stations and garages (like Roinick's in Briggsville) trying to skin my knuckles on raggedy old cars, as the old mechanics sat by the coal stove watching their saliva sizzle on the hot cast iron. Now, I don't ever remember a Pep Boys in our neck of the woods but this goes back about as far as I can remember. CAUTION: This may not be suitable for children under the age of 12! I learned from y'all (youze guys)!

Sure do miss the Polish picnics, the neighborhood bars, the rivalry with Coal Township, but most important-the friendliest people in the world. Raised Catholic-can't get used to the schools and churches being closed and merged with new names. A lot of tradition is going to be lost. Anybody from Shamokin in the D.C. area?

Comments: We've just returned from a month in the coal region and it was lovely, as usual. What makes it great is that although it does change, it's very gradual compared to much of the U.S., especially where Ilive. I know from talking to people there and from reading this guestbook how much we love the coal region--my friend thinks the culm banks are ugly, but I say Yeah, but it's MY ugly! It'ssure not as ugly as strip malls and condos! I liked the comment someone made about letting city-types stay therebecause it's serene and beautiful in your area. Every year I expect to see more decline, but the little towns keepon ticking--wish you hadn't gotten Wal-Mart as that's a real drain on downtowns--so be sure to continue to usethe local services or the coal region will lose its identity and the things that make it unique. So many people arenostalgic for what you have, please takecare of it or it'll become just like allthe places you don't want to live! Sorry this is so long, but I love it tooand hope it never changes! Enjoy the leaves changing and the fall festivals and the bloom fair and we'll see yiz next summer. Can't wait to see the score of the Southern-Mt Carmel game, but I'll have to since the News Item doesn't update its on-line service until4 p.m.---

Comments: Yo! just came back from a walk down the Mahanoy Plane. I enjoyed the walk, saw the trees changing their colors, smelled the sweet smell from the abandoned mines, sat on the old timbers hat once were the base for the railroad tracks, and relish the life I live here in the Coal Region. I can't tell you how good it is to live here in the Northeast of Pennsylvania. jealouy? Stay where you are. I love the serenity. The lifestyle is slow, but SOOOO beautiful! move away, you city wanabees . . .I'll die in the hard coal region, and you'll only remember the good times. I live here and I love it. Tomorrow, I'll walk again i the lonelyand abandoned coal fields, and love every minute if it!

Comments: We find this site to be very entertaining and informative. We first entered this site after reading an article in the newspaper in November, '97. We enjoyed it very much especially since Michael's family, on his Mother's side is from Branchdale, and on his Father's side, from Buck Run. Now, every time we need any information, we return to this site. This time we were looking for a newspaper for the obituaries, plus we found a local flower shop to order flowers. Thank you very much for a good time at your site and everything we need to stay informed of everything that goes on in the coal regions.

It was great. I went to Jimmy's on Broad Street for a hotdog and to John's on the Heights for the good food. The best food and shopping is in Penna. Stopped in Mt. Carmel and found out the Matucci's is closed on Sunday and Monday. So maybe next year I'll be lucky. Heard about it from people writing in the guestbook on this great website.

The top of my list would be swimming at the A-hole - age 10 through 15; drinking at the A-hole - age 16 through 20; and last but certainly not least, the Sunday night drives to Shendough to moon the crowds on the street corners (not me of course:}).
