Name: Mike Carnuccio Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Danville/Home Town Shamokin Time: 1998-10-29 23:04:08 Comments: I spent the last three nights reading every entry in the guest book, the words were different but all had one message and that was over whelming pride for their anthracite heritage. This web site introduced me to some people I never knew because of age or other factors, but when I talked with them via email our stories were similar as we grew up in the same neighborhood. We quoted the same adolesent pasttimes, the same prank's. One big thrill when I was young was the yearly arrival of the IRON HORSE a vintage steam locomotive that pasted through town, the trips to the peanut shell in the back of old spock's pickup truck, the hikes up the mountain with your buddies. I sometimes wish things were the same so my daughters and grandsons could live the childhood I had the privelage of living. This site no doubt will inlighten those of you who have not had the chance to grow up in such a great place, The Coal Region |

I really enjoyed this site. I was thinking about when I first entered school in Levittown, Pa. the teachers thought I had a speech problem and put me in speech class. That was until they met my parents in the grocery store and I was taken out of that class the next day! |

I noticed that the recipe file is missing Italian Easter pie. It was always fun to visit friends houses to taste that local treat for each family had their own version of the recipe. Perhaps some of the visitors to this site will share their family recipe. |

The coalspeak page revived a lot of memories of my grandparents (Barrett, Nicolodi, Fabian, and Baran). My parents grew up in Luzerne County, but moved to Maryland soon after they married. All of us kids grew up there, but we still have truckloads of relations in the coal-mining area. Finally, at long last, I know why my mother refers to green peppers as mangoes and why my grandmother always tacked "hayna" on questions we were meant to confirm. |

From: on a farm in Iowa Time: 1998-10-16 20:14:35 Comments: I lived in Locust Gap, Atlas, and Beaverdale. When I was a teenager I tried to make a cake for my brother's school outing. It was a cake mix that required only eggs and water to be added. I forgot the eggs. So, when I turned the pans upsidedown to cool the baked cakes, I had two heaps of crumbs. I knew I'd get yelled at, so I called up my boyfriend, Woody, in Marion Heights to help me rid the homestead of all traces of the cake. We drove it up to Marion Heights in a brown Ackamee bag, hiked it into the woods and threw it down a coal shaft. Those were the days! |

I was wondering if any of you Mart Carmelites remember a guy who back in the 50's used to lead the parades in town. I believe they used to call him Squeeky. Just wondered if he was still around or if someone took his place. Mt carmel had more than a few town characters, Who added color to the town when I was growing up there. If there is anyone out there who grew up in the fifties and was from the East end of town. There was also a guy who was a hermit and lived in the woods near Midvalley and used to come into town every day and get food from the various stores he always wore gum boots and as kids we called him gum boot Pete never did know what his real name was but I do know that he is dead now. Anybody remember? |

You can't be depressed when you read this. I just laughed and laughed. My husband came in to see why I was laughing, he is not a coalcracker, so he didn't understand. The coalspeak is so funny, guess we are funnier than we thought, and better than most, too bad we didn't know that when we were growing up. Shamokin was a good place to grow up, my kids missed having family up the street and being able to walk on sidewalks. I forgot all the fun I had. Thanks for the memories. When I get togheter with my brothers and sisters I am going to print this out and read it to them. It definely will bring us back to our roots. Thanks for the memories and the laughs. Oh yeah, I'm from Fern St, graduated from OLOL, went to St. Stephens. Keep in touch. Jean |

Name: Becky Tuszynski Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Quakertown PA Time: 1998-10-06 09:16:03 Comments: Love the site. I grew up in Shamokin. I especially like CoalSpeak--now I can prove to my family that other people DO talk like that. Dippie eggs brought back fond memories. Mom would cut each slice of white bread (Holsum or Yoch's) into three sticks, perfect for dipping. This also reminded me of gock-gock bread, our family name for French toast. It's also nice to see Knoebel's referred to as 'the Grove.' To me that's always a sure sign that someone grew up in that area. I recall swimming at the Grove was an upscale activity. For us, a walk out to the Edgie (the Edgewood pool--what a hole!) was more usual. Here's another food item to consider--Coney Island hamburgers. The Coney (East Independence Street in Shamokin) was famous for its burgers smothered in fried onions. My dad always loved Coneys until he saw the cook spit on the grill to see if it was hot enough. I also remember stories of the Coney filling with patrons from the Hotel Stanlee after closing time. The guy at the counter could judge how drunk they were by setting a bottle of soda (Catawissa, I think) and an upside-down glass in front of them, and watching to see if they turned the glass over before pouring their soda. I could go on and on. BTW, you have a link from Uniontown to Ferndale in the Patches section. They are two different places. Ferndale (site of the Ferndale school, where I attended 1st grade) was out at the western end of Pine, Spruce, and Mulberry streets in Coal Township. Uniontown and Tharptown were one and the same, down 61 towards Sunbury (now bypassed) surrounding the Shamokin Hospital. |

From: Floyds Knobs, Indiana Time: 1998-10-04 18:26:23 Comments: My farther was transferred to Dallas, PA from Phildaelphia when I was 3 years old and I was rasied in the Wilkes-Barre area, until I moved away after completing college in 1979 and have lived a number of places around the country. But the best thing that happen to me was to meet and marry by wife of sixteen years, Bernadette Wisnieski of Swoyersville (pronounced "Swerville", PA). This was one of "dem" mixed marriages, ya know. A Irish Protestant and a Polish Catolic is a hard sell in Wilkes-Barre in any century. Of course, as is expected by the family (i.e., grandparents), the family, including kids and dogs make our annual trek to the Coal Region every Christmas to visit relatives, old friends and enjoy the food, fun and BEER, which one can only get in Northeast PA. Although the trip takes 12 hours each way, our family always enjoys our time in Wilkes-Barre. Save a Stegmaier for the Moores' from Indiana |
