Comments: Len is from Gordon and Noreen form Shenandoah. We were a way for a while, but now we are back. Lived in Philadelphia for almost 10 years, and could never find a burger to match Tonys in G-ville, a pizza like Morones or a Yuengling at the ELKS in Ashland any cheaper or any better. It is fun to read this web site and think about old times. Any one out there knowing us get in touch.

Comments: I am looking for information on my grandfather Antoni Waszkiewicz/Waszkiewicz who worked in the mines during the 20s 30s & maybe 40s. He and wife Cecelia lived in Scranton. I am curious if there was an accident in that time frame where he and another man were the only two that got out alive. Thanks

Comments: Hello. Could not get e-mail to go through to respond to a question on what mine someone had worked at. But maybe my suggestion would help others with similar questions. The Scranton Public Library has a great collection of local history. I don't know if they have data listing employees at various collieries, but it is worth a try. Having worked at a library reference desk elsewhere, I think most librarians welcome questions that are asking for a single fact such as that--as opposed to asking for an extensive bibliography that researchers should be compiling by their own legwork.

And we cannot forget the KNOTTY PINES in Hazelton. And last but not least I cannot forget the favorite spot in the heights, LOVERS LANE, Of course I never got there, I just heard about it from my friends. You were talking about pizza, you have to remember PENNSYS in SHENANDOAH on coal street.

Have been doing family search for a few years. Any information anyone has would be appreciated. Yes I have been in touch with Patrick Campbell. Paternally, the Joneses come from Tamaqua; the Kleckners from New Ringgold area. Sassaman and Koenig are family names too. What a great place to grow up! Love to come back and visit.

Comments: I was born and raised here. I am working on a family tree (found a lot of nuts, lol) for the past 10 years. My family worked in the mines (my grandfather and cousins). I am looking for info on Herbert, McCracken, Earley. This is such a great site. Everyone knows what we are saying! Hayna. And don't we all feel honkey dory? I will be sure to stop in from time to time on my web travels and see how things are. I sent the link to my brother in VA. I love the recipes. When I was in the Air Force I had a friend that was from here and everytime one of us came home on leave we had to bring back Snyders preztals, Middlesworth chips and Genesse Cream Ale! I have a few pictures of my grandfather standing with some friends outside a bar holding what looks like a big mug of black beer! It was really dark beer. I wish I knew who the friends were. Take care.

Comments: Enjoy Coal Speak. Checking out THE PAYER PAGE and saw additional Coal Speak. Noted the term "Hunky-Dory" and its meaning as a patch town near Sheppton ---- Growing up in and near the coal regions the term Hunky Dory meant everything was OK. Someone would ask you, "How are you?" and your reply might be "Honky-Dory". Does anyone else remember it being used that way. I never gave it any thought until now and I spent a life-time using the term. Wonder why it meant everything OK?????

Great Grandfather came from Slovakia, settled in Eckley before moving the family to Freeland. My Dad, Edward John Kislan has told me so many stories about the coal mining life. I am presently doing genealogy research on the Kislan family and would love to hear from anyone who knows the Kislan family. I will share all with Dad, who now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I was born and raised in Pottsville, however all my relatives still live in patches near Gilberton (Wiggans, Suffolk, Maizeville, the Foot, Long Row). Did you ever hear of Gilberton referred to as "Ducktown" (due to the flooding, even after a light rain). I'm sure they will enjoy your site and argue over spelling and pronunciation. P.S. I never knew what C.C.D. stood for, even after all those grueling years of after school torture. Thanks again.

I haven't lived there since 1990, so not many traces of my coal cracker heritage remain--until i get into the kitchen. Tonight, as I entertained friends, I bucked the traditions of California cuisine and made a feast of ethnic foods from Northeast PA. I made Halushki and Pierogi following the recipes from the cookbook. My grandmother, who lives in Swoyersville, PA, still makes the best perogi, of course, but my friends did appreciate the new experience.

Comments: This site is unbelievable! My grandfather was a true coal miner and died of black lung. I never thought anyone outside of the coal region really took an interest in the area. I was born in Ashland and raised in Shamokin, went to both Shamokin Area School District and Lourdes Regional. Attended Bloomsburg University and moved out of the area. Had a lot of great times "cruising" downtown Shamokin over the years. I don't think I would have liked growing up anywhere else! Kudo's to the creator's of this site!

But remember my Dad and other relatives talking about it.! Maybe if Dick Yuengling added that to his products Yuengling would be even more popular! He would have to make the new brewery larger and could add enough jobs that he would have to ask all of us who left home to seek employment else where to come BACK.

Comments: All roads lead to home. I'm in the Air Force and have been stationed many places over the past 12 years. I arrived at my Pentagon assignment and a colleague said she knew this man that I just had to meet. He is also a Major in the Air Force and is assigned at the Pentagon as well. His name is Bob Siegle. We began by e-mailing one another and then progressed to talking on the phone. Then one day I asked him where he was originally from and he said, "A town in Pennsylvania. Home of Yuengling beer. Ever hear of it?" I was surprised and said, "Get Out! That's where I am from!" We compared notes and discovered we graduated the same year (1982) but from different high schools. I graduated from Pottsville High and he graduated from Nativity. Although our younger brothers played Little League together on Coke at the Rotary field in Pottsville, our parents knew each other, and we had mutual friends; we never met. We continue to be fascinated by the fact that although we grew up in the same hometown, have family members who knew one another early in life, and have travelled and served in the same armed service for almost 12 years our paths have never crossed until late 1998. It truly is a small world. We remain very good friends and thank the Bader's for introducing us. Sherry (Roberts) McAtee

People can still pick out my coal cracker accent after all these years... Loved the site, will be ordering book. The Welsh Church on Main Ave in Scran'n still have fagot sales (and Welsh Cookie sales)... Learned of this from a cousin in W-B, have friends from Girardville (Kelly's), relatives also in Wyoming, Taylor, and EYNON -- not far from Sugarman's... This was great fun -- and yes, you don't realize it until you leave and the rest of the country makes fun of you! Wouldn't change a thing... great place to grow up.

Comments: i happened upon this page yesterday during a routine search and was amazed to see the difference in language and usage throughout the region. I was raised in nanny-coke( down da line) and the words used in Shenandoah and Mahanoy City are very dissimiliar from the words we use. Some i recognized others i was completely lost on. But this is a hot page nonetheless and the coal region gets nuff respect. As a Patriot News writer people often inquire about where i'm from. "Big up the Coal Mines" i usually reply or since i'm only five min. from Wilkes-Barre " WB oi, what!" Its an expression that emboldens locals. Anyway had to give youz nuff props on the page, its thorough and finally just like to give a shout to all my peoples in Mt. Carmel, Lansford, Nesque, and of course Wyoming Valley this is how we do! One love

Comments: Preston Hill, Girardville PA. North Schulkill High School, 12th grade Drop out. Do you remember the ROXY THEATER (owned by the famous MR. Byrun T. Pikitus, GOD rest his soul) in Ashland and the HIGHWAY DRIVE IN in Fountin Springs, I worked at both of them back in the 70's. Remember parking in Bernville before the fire made it that far. We kept our empty beer bottles in the case while sitting in the strippens and the cops left us go when they caught us, with a thank you, it's true. We used to criuse the strippens in my Chevy to gather fire wood for the Bernville Bonfire. Oh what good times they were!!!!!! used to go swimming at Reichweines pool in Lavelle and at the A-HOLE in Girardville which by the way, my kid brother MR. SCOTT ALLEN BOEHMER (former US MARINE, GOD rest his soul) Fell to his death in the A-HOLE. Hey, how about CENTIOLES PIZZA in Girardville, can't beleive they never started a national chain. They could have. It's the best in the world. And walk up the street A block or so you could get the best SCREAMERS in the world. Life was dull @ times but Great @ other times. This site has alot of potential. Pass the word to your family and friends, this site can reunite us coalcrackers. PS. Any one know my dad, MR. LAMAR BOEHMER GOD rest his soul, Died with Black lung Or my mom GLADEYS BOEHMER, GOD rest her soul? I'd love to hear from ya, Feel free to e-mail pitstop@uplink.net
