Reading the CoalSpeak section was deja vu for me. It is said that you (yiz, youz) retain the speech of the area where you learned to speak without even knowing it. I can see that I still use CoalSpeak quite a bit. We always went Halloweening, and my grandmother would say "goat the store". When I repeated some of the phrases, they came out quite naturally. I moved to Bethlehem (Bethlem) after Pottsville and CoalSpeak was quite prevalent there. Your site made me really homesick. |

Now I finally have somewhere to send people for explanations/definitions of the bizarre things that come out of the mouth of someone raised in Barnesville. Class of '87 Mahanoy Area... remember 'hanging out' with 70 or 80 of your closest friends until you found a 'Harry' to buy some cases of the 'Best? (DEF: High School Harry: Those guys that graduated but still hung out with the younger crowd, and proved their coolness by buying everyone who asked them beer.. sneaking it out of the car behind the Stop N go, and taking a $2 or $5 dollar tip.) How about 'bumper skiing' up railroad st? (hanging on to someone's bumper on a and letting them drag you (on your feet) up a snow covered street) 'sa wonder we never got kilt doin dat. I was down the shore last year and dey were sellin ying yang in the IMPORT case for $7.00 a sixer... I laughed till i cried. And for the record, who the hell figured the best place for the high school stadium in Mahanoy City was right next to the shit plant? Ahh, memories. |

Congratulations! I'll watch you all on Letterman someday for sure. You should write a sitcom with all these funny quirks we share. Name: Jean Krevinas Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Washington, D.C. Time: 1999-02-02 18:14:20 Comments: I'm a Girardville gal. Attended St. Vincent's Catholic School and North Schuylkill High. Graduated in 1967. Moved to Washington, D.C. and have been here since. I also have a brother living here, Vince, and another brother in Girardville, Joe (who also lived in Washington during the mid-sixties and early seventies). Back then, when all three of us were living here, we hung out at Matt Kanes, as did a lot of people from the coal region. In fact, Joe tended bar there for a number of years. I would love to hear from anyone who might remember me or my brothers. |

I was born in Iowa, raised in Ohio, spent my teen years in Easton, PA. Our neighbor used to mystify us with phrases such as "up-de-line" and "fil-em". One other phrase she uses is "pond" - as in: "I went down to the dog pond to see if they had any puppies for adoption." |

He took us everywere, I remember the day he told us about how the goats were used to bring coal out of the mine. Now I don't known if he was fooling or not but it was great fun. We always stopped at the German Club on Blackman St before going home. What was the Mine name and shaft # anyone ? |
