I wanted to say I think everyone had their own favorite Bar and Beer which is to say that all the places in the Coal Region were great, no one deserves to be on top. The best place on any given day to a Miner coming out of the mine and heading home was the first place he would go in and have that cold brew and than thank the Lord he made it another day. I wonder what it would have been like if equal rights for women passed when the mines were going strong? |

I offered a super recipe for wet-bottom sho-fly pie last week, had several takers. Last night as I was eating my 5th huge bowl of dandelion with hot bacon dressing this Spring, thought others interested in a good hot bacon dressing recipe. Double batch; 2 cups water; 2 cups sugar; tablespoon+ cornstarch; 1/3 cup vinegar; heat and stir to thicken; fry up 1/4 lb. bacon cut in small pieces, not too crisp; dump it with the fat into the hot mix; stir it good, pour hot over fresh dandelion, or endive, or spinach or any other greens. I salt the greens before pouring; you could put salt into the dressing. Add more vinegar to suit taste. |

We would come back in the afternoon towatch them come up the mine shaft after they were finished working. They now looked all black and tired. One miner always had a mule behind him and took this animal to a water well, a hole in the ground and walked the mule through to clean ( if possible) this poor animal.Always mystery to the miners they went down into a black hole, and at the end of their shift they mysteriouly came up. Or so it seemed to us kids.A Shenandoah natiive. |

On 309 south, theres a little road that goes to the right. Take that and it goes in Lofty, down through Delano and into Mahanoy. The road is real windy and bad during the winter. The lofty tunnel is there too. |
