Comments: I love this site. The memories long forgotten come alive with every click of my mouse. I was Born in the back bedroom of my grandparents house in Locustdale. I have my original birth certificate, hand written and signed denoting it to be the first one issued. I graduated for North Schuylkill High School in 1972. Keep up the good work on this site. It makes being away from "HOME" easier. Any friends looking to chat on the web will know me as "MUCK".

I was born on the West Side of Scranton; my father's from Hyde Park, my mother is from the borough of Taylor. I grew up in the Syracuse area, but I know that accent so well ... that's my family's voice yer talkin' bout!

I can't believe how much I recognize! Would love to see something about the Whistler's Mother statue on the hill in Ashland. We've lived in many different areas, but none as homey as NE PA. We're now in the DC area, and we love it here, but it doesn't have the ethnicity and personality of home. I would just like to say how much I have enjoyed your page and how many memories it gives those of us who can't always get home to see the area and eat our favorite foods(Conney Island burgers!). When I first got to this place people would look at me when I would talk, and if I tried to tell them that everyone from where I'm from talk like I do, all I got was doubt. Your page has helped me prove myself to them. And for a southerner to hear someone talk worse then they do that is a big thing. Thank you and as they say in the south... "I'll see ya'll around!" Comments: My heart is still in Shenandoah. I wanted to say I think everyone had their own favorite Bar and Beer which is to say that all the places in the Coal Region were great, no one deserves to be on top. The best place on any given day to a Miner coming out of the mine and heading home was the first place he would go in and have that cold brew and than thank the Lord he made it another day. I wonder what it would have been like if equal rights for women passed when the mines were going strong?

Comments: This morning I posted Record 1633, including a recipe for hot bacon dressing. Should point out that it's better with two fork-beaten eggs in the mix. I usually stir the corn starch into the eggs and smooth and stir. Dandelion locally is getting a bit longer and tougher, but still great, I got some at Renninger's Farmer's Market yesterday, making another batch of hot bacon dressing.

Comments: Been here before! Regularly check it out. From Pottsville, never got far. I offered a super recipe for wet-bottom sho-fly pie last week, had several takers. Last night as I was eating my 5th huge bowl of dandelion with hot bacon dressing this Spring, thought others interested in a good hot bacon dressing recipe. Double batch; 2 cups water; 2 cups sugar; tablespoon+ cornstarch; 1/3 cup vinegar; heat and stir to thicken; fry up 1/4 lb. bacon cut in small pieces, not too crisp; dump it with the fat into the hot mix; stir it good, pour hot over fresh dandelion, or endive, or spinach or any other greens. I salt the greens before pouring; you could put salt into the dressing. Add more vinegar to suit taste.

In our squadron we have a bar where I share some coal region favorites like hot boloagna, halupkies, pierogies, and around the holidays I will make boilo; they really enjoy them. But, don't believe me when I tell them we have a shoot involving live pigeons. Doesn't happen often, but when I get home it's like taking a step back in time and makes you appreciate where you were raised. With the current world situation, who knows where I will end up next. All I know is that there is other fighting going on in the world other than on the street corners in "Shendo" No matter where I end up, I will always call the coal region home! Comments: Very kewl page. I am from the coal region. I grew up in Coal Run. My gram use to make Potato candy and I loved it. Gram isn't with us anymore and I've been looking for about 2 years for the recipe on how to make it so I could share it with my children. Thanks to your page that is now possible. I loved the pictures that you have on your page and the history of other coal crackers. Keep up the great work.

Comments: As a young kid living in Shenandoah we used to go to the entrance of the coal mines and watch the miners going to work, looking clean and ready to do a days work. We would come back in the afternoon towatch them come up the mine shaft after they were finished working. They now looked all black and tired. One miner always had a mule behind him and took this animal to a water well, a hole in the ground and walked the mule through to clean ( if possible) this poor animal.Always mystery to the miners they went down into a black hole, and at the end of their shift they mysteriouly came up. Or so it seemed to us kids.A Shenandoah natiive.

Comments: Hey man. Lofty is a small village(not quite a patch town) south of McAdoo. On 309 south, theres a little road that goes to the right. Take that and it goes in Lofty, down through Delano and into Mahanoy. The road is real windy and bad during the winter. The lofty tunnel is there too.

Comments: What's all the "yo" about, is that the latest coal region lingo cause its out everywhere else! I miss everything about the good 'ole coal region except the weather and the backward asss lingo! Other than that, I hail from the tiny town of Middleport (halfway between Pottsville and Tamaqua on Rt 209). I especially miss Renninger's & Hometown Auctions, Perogis, Lebanon Bologna, Yuengling beer, Cheap Gas Prices, and Pottsville Pizzaria! I hail from the disbanded old school of Saint Clair, class of '81, Go Saints! Great site, a big thumbs up to the developers and all involved, it sure brings back memories! Adios Amigoes from SoCal!!!

Comments: Lykens native. Live on what is called Coaldale road [Pottsville St. or OLD route 209] This road leads east to where the old Briquette Plant was stood, processing coal powder [dust] into briquettes. This is now Medco Process Plant #1. A Reading rail line used to service this operation. As you come into Wiconisco, bear left; go up the mountain and you will arrive at the old PP&l site, now torn down. The old pump house is now Medco #2.
