Name: Henry Zelones Website: not just yet Referred by: Other From: Western Australia Time: 1999-07-17 23:20:19 Comments: From Shamokin. Regarding the closing of the movie theatres. Growing up in the 50's, some of us kids had another way of selecting the movies that they wanted to see. During the 50's the Catholic Church would publish their movie classification guide and would put it on the bullitan board at the back of the church. Every Sunday you would see many of us huddled around the list after mass was over and the Church now deserted. The list was broken into 3 parts. The A list, B list and the C list. The C list was for those movies that were condemned and as I remember a sin to go and see. The Theatre owners must have loved it as the C list was always the longest list. Of course by today's standards those movies were pretty tame. Good memories,it sad to hear it is now all gone. |

Name: Stephen Kowalewski or Kove Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: California Time: 1999-07-17 16:39:53 Comments: Hi - the movies in Shamokin - Victoria, Capitol and Majestic (the bug house) were always special places for me when I was a kid growing up in Shamokin in the 40s. It was the whole experience associated with going to the movies that was so exciting. By that I mean - the process of finding out that a good movie would be playing from the News Dispatch, or, an earlier Movie Preview, or from a buddy by word of mouth - the growing anticipation as the show date approached - the walk to and from the movie, often with buddies - the watching of the News and Cartoon(s) which played before the main feature - the frequent hilarious outbursts of the audience, mostly children, at the Saturday afternoon show. Coming up with the money to buy the ticket was sometimes a problem. I remember, often, me and my buddies would look in trash cans for empty soda bottles to turn in for a 2 cent deposit. Six bottles equated to one 12 cent ticket to the Majestic. One boy would be selected to buy the ticket while the rest of the gang, sometimes as many as ten kids, would go up the stairs on the east side of the Majestic building which led to a landing outside the balcony door. The kid who bought the ticket, once inside the theater, would sneak up to the balcony (often closed to the audience) to open the door and let the rest of the gang in. Watching this gang of kids descend the stairs from the balcony probably caused a lot of consternation with the ushers who must have wondered where all these kids were coming from. Now, with all the buildings gone, all that remains are the nice memories. |

Name: Linda (Fessler) Costelli Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: North Haven, Ct. Time: 1999-07-13 13:18:20 Comments: Stephen's post regarding the Victoria Theatre's demolition reminded me that I too have been making trips to Shamokin over the past few months due to a family thing happening and was sad to see it being torn down. Many fond memories remain of hours spent sitting in there on Saturday afternoons as a kid and recall the Majestic Theatre which sat side by side with the Victoria. It was always a toss up Saturday's between the Victoria, the Majestic or the Capitol further up and across the street. Many times it depended on where Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry or Bomba of the Jungle was playing. Those days are long gone! Also recall the days when none of the theatre's were open on Sunday's as it was considered in those days to be sinful to step inside anywhere but church on a Sunday. What a big "to do" it made all over town when they finally opened their doors on what was then always referred to as "The Lord's Day". My oh my, how things have changed! |

Name: Stephen Kowalewski or Kove Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Carmichael, CA Time: 1999-07-11 03:09:02 Comments: I was in Shamokin yesterday and observed a sad event, the demolition of the Victoria Theater, a major Shamokin landmark. As of yesterday, the front of the building is still standing but the rest is a pile of rubble. The balcony seats, still in their original position, gaze down, so to speak, on a pile of broken bricks, twisted metal and broken planks. In the next few days it will be completely leveled. For me, It was a sad sight to behold. I spent many happy hours in that building. It is evidently sad for others too because, as I stood there looking, I saw many old timers stopping their cars and getting out and taking pictures. Some even took bricks as mementoes. |

I am originally from Branchdale, Pa. We recently had friends visit us from Texas, they copied the recipes to take with them. I laughed at the top ten lists, and also swam in several of the stripping holes. |

I really miss the whole area, but I came back for a funeral at Brock Cemetary in Ashland about a year ago, and there was nothing there but the memories. I left Ashland in 1962 and have only been back once. I must say that it is a lot cleaner than I remember. The mines made everything so black and dirty. I remember the smell of the coal fires that hung over town on the cold winter days. I still have friends that live there, but I doubt if I'll ever go home again. |

Always looking to meet and talk to other collectors of Breweriana from the F&S, Mount Carmel, Kaier's, Columbia, Yuengling's, and Mount Carbon Breweries. I have long lost relatives (Meszko) somewhere in Mahanoy Plain. I remember as a child visiting them and going into a coal mine that was right in their back yard! |

Name: Gwendalynn Gohlke Dunn Website: Referred by: Net Search From: San Antonio,Texas Time: 1999-07-01 23:49:05 Comments: I am doing research on the surname of GOHLKE and the various phonetic spellings of such. I came across this site from a someone with the surname of GOLKA who posted a message. I would like to try to connect all the GOHLKE surnames and the different spellings of such throughout the USA as well as overseas locations. Most or all of these came from very near each other in the Prussian provinces of Brandenburg and Posen. I think that an earlier time they werfe most likely all related to each other. Thank you very much, Gwendalynn Gohlke Dunn P.S. I am from Texas awnd the earliest Gohlke who immigrated here to Texas was Johann Sigismund Gohlke, born July 4,1802 in Gurkow,Kreis Friedeberg,Brandenburg,Posen, and he and 6 others immigrated on the ship "Texas". |
