Comments: I'm from the Catawissa area and graduated from Southern Columbia H.S. This site is a blast! I was fortunate enough to leave the area - by doing so, I have learned English! Feel sorry for other young people that haven't left yet. It is sad, but it seems that the younger people that stay there, never really experience life. (They go to the same bars, talk about the same people, and have the same problems.) Life is much more beautiful on the outside of those walls! I still love to visit the pretty country where my family lives, but that's about all. Truly sorry if I offended anyone, this is just one woman's opinion. Take Care & God Bless!

Comments: Just spent 2 hours reminising. My hometown was Middleport and my husband's St. Clair. Sure miss all the good foods and recipes that we can't get out here but bring back when we do get back to the coal region. Husband wants a recipe for ring bologna. My dad was one of the grade school teachers when Middleport had a grade school and my mom had been on the town council in the 50's.

I loved my recent visit back to Kulpmont, seeing the old places, seeing the old friends, and seeing the new places. But I have to admit it's great to be back in San Diego. Love to hear from anybody in the region.

Comments: Hi there! So excited to find all this information. My father was John Malone of Spruce Street in Mahanoy City. He built the Kaier's Brewery sign. My Grandfather was Joe Malone who worked at Kaier's for many years as an electrician. My mother's name was Kitty Donovan of E. Coal Street in Shenandoah. I have wonderful memories of this region and am delighted to find more information about this area.

Comments: I am of Ukrainian heritage. I was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. They call people from this area coal-crackers. They call people from Wilkes-Barre, hainas, which is an expression which means isn't that so. Does anyone use this expression anymore. Sometimes I slip and use it here in Pottstown, Pa. I have been living here for the last thirty years, but I still have relatives in northeastern Pa. My parents passed away within the last 5 years, but I still maintain the old homestead in Wilkes-Barre.

Shamokin makes me sad, so I'm glad that I can remember happier and more prosperous times through this site. The lists are a fantastic idea! Love to read them.

Interested in finding friends that still live in the region of Atlas or Mt. Carmel. Went to Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, Class of 1949. Enjoy the Coal Region and often visit, still have family living there enjoy going to Knoebels and the Church Picnic's. Love to chat with old school mates or original coal crackers. Home is where the heart is and my heart is still in the Coal Region. Married to Charlie Stewart, originally lived in Yardley, Pa., he was born and raised there, not far from Ewing across the Delaware River into Pa. This is sure an Award Winning Site.

Comments: I was born in Mt. Carmel and lived in various towns through the coal region. My parents worked in Silk Mills and we moved where the work was until I was 10 years old when we moved to Athens. I always felt that my roots were in Mt. Carmel as I would go back and spend summers with my grandparents. I am doing our genelogy and looking for information on the following names: DeFrehn, DeFrahn, Davis, Morgan,Del Camp, Derr, Miller I am proud to be a coal cracker. By the way in your coal speak you forgot RED(clear) as red off the table.

Comments: I was surprised by the tone of Ms. Jacobs comments! We have the opportunity to get back "home" at least 4x's a year! Our beloved family and friends still live and work in the area! While things are not as they were in the 50's its still a great place to live and be proud that you were raised there. No place in this universe is like it was in the 50's....some have just progressed faster than others. I applaude those people who work darn hard to continue to try and make the infrastructures of these wonderful old towns full of history a safe haven not only for those still living there, but for those of us who are proud to say we grew up there!

Comments: Well, I'm originally from the same place I live now, but all of my family on both of my parent's sides are from and still live in the Coal Region. This influence, as well as living not that far away myself, has left a strong Coal Region impact on my life. I found this site thoroughly enjoyable, especially the CoalSpeak, which isn't that far off from the English my family and I use everyday!

Comments: Regarding Ms. Jacobs comments, it seems to me that your coal region is a place where many lives and limbs were lost to backbreaking and dangerous work all to the advantage of those who got rich on it and moved on, leaving behind abandoned mines, slagpiles and company homes that were not worthy of the people who had to live in them and work so hard just to survive. I do not uderstand why anyone would express such contempt for a hardworking people making the best of the remnants after the factory owners and mine owners pulled up stakes. At any rate, we found the coal region worthy or our attention.

Comments: Thrilled to find this resource! I was born Shirley Isaac in Luzerne, a LOOOONG time ago, so I don't know if anybody remembers the family of Rabbi David Isaac. My sisters were Ethel and Miriam, and my brothers, Isaac and Sheldon. Have only been back once, but still feel some kind of bond. Look forward to hearing from anybody. Polar

Comments: I'm originally from Minersville. I graduated MAHS class of '86. My BIL Jim Nettles sent me the URL. What a fun site! I really enjoyed reading the CoalSpeak. It made me laugh out loud. People CAN really tell that you're from the Coal Region as soon as you open your mouth. Keep up the great work : )

Comments: Mahanoy Plane is my home town. Left Mahanoy Plane 1951 to enter Stevens Trade in Lancaster PA. Went to grade school in Mahanoy Plane and 2 years of High School In Gilberton. I still miss the coal region after all these years. I am now retired an am enjoying life. I kind of keep in touch with what is happening currently in the coal region by logging on to www.pottsville.com.

Comments: Y'all haven't been back to the good old coal region lately. It's a dump. I wouldn't live there again if you paid me millions! Sorry, but it's not the same as it was during the good old days in the 50's, now it's all old people and young people on welfare. The houses are falling apart and so are the town's infrastructures. What a mess. It's depressing to visit, I was just there in March of this year and I hope I don't have to go back again any time soon.
