Comments: Great Site! Sadly, I was born in Washington, D.C. but my mother is from Mahanoy City. Gotta coupla additions to your dictionary: Dutchies, The: The Good American Hose Company (volunteer fire company), located at 8th and Mahanoy St in Mahanoy City. The name was changed from the German American Hose company circa 1916,for obvious reasons. Valley, The: Locust Valley, esp. the Barnesville and Tuscarora State Park area, as referred to in Mahanoy City. "He moved out to the Valley". Also, I always heard Mahanoy Creek referred to as Shit Crick, being as up to recent times it did serve as the sewage discharge point for most of Mahanoy City. It runs under Market Street and wasn't completely covered over until after WWII. Also, in Mahanoy City, the Vulcan is the patch at the top of the hill, where 54 interchanges with I-81. I spent many summers there and I never heard the other side of the hill (where the tunnel comes out) referred to as anything other than Hosensock, Mahanoy Tunnel, Barnesville or just the generic "the Valley". Have a great one!

Comments: Originally from Minersville. I consider myself lucky; I had jobs in the "region" that enabled me to get out and meet a large number of people from all over NEPA. I have always felt the people of the region is what made it special (cheap beer, great pizza and pierogies were just part of the bonus). A few yung lads came into my restaurant in AC and told me about this site. I have been sitting here for hours...see some familiar names, laughing out loud and reminiscing. Without a doubt, the most fun I have ever had was in Schuylkill County (shitface Sunday @ the 5TH ST., "wild Wednesday" @ Puggy's Pub {the 2 BEST bars EVER!!} and weekends @ RUMORS) GREAT TMES & GREAT PEOPLE. I moved into a new house the day BEFORE Hurricane Floyd hit the beach. I told my neighbor that if I could survive the winters in NEPA I could survive a little wind and rain. So we got a quart (cost more den a buck) and watched the storm. This is great; instead of the guy going back to the region-I can bring the region to me. Looking forward to hearing from some people from "back in the day". This site is creative, innovative and even informative. Keep up the GREAT work.

Comments: found this site in the process of looking for my history. Was born in Mt. Carmel in '46". Father was a "stripminer". I found humor in the vocab. of Coalspeak. I can remember many of the terms being used in my home when I was a child. Moving from the regiion as a young child, taking residence in South Central Pa., and many years of formal education have not erased these words from my speaking language. What's dat say? I'm going to share the vocab. list with my four brothers. They'll get a kick out of it.

Comments: Man, I just got back from the Coal Region and it was a blast!! It just doesn't change much year to year--people there keep their traditions going, so you can eat at Coney Island even after all these years. Finally tasted Centiole's pizza and soupies for the first time (yum). If you see my friends Jim and Doris (the Bleenie Queen) Grohuski of Mt. Carmel or Tommy and June Kiefaber of Coal Twp, tell them I said hi! Tommy's the Soupie King of Coal Twp and could probably even tell you how to make them if you've got a cellar and winter coming on. The Coal Region's be-yoo-tee-ful-- I just wish there weren't so many beer bottles along the roads--tell your neighbors and kids to quit junking up the woods and roadsides with trash there in God's country.....the snake road out of Mt. Carmel was a mess. See youse next year for more fun!!!

So I offer the following for your dictionary, [and this may be limited to W-B, I don't know]: Hamburg: a hamburger or ground beef, seen on menus at bazaars; Bazaar: community fundraising party with beer, ethnic foods, and polka bands; Minced ham: lunchmeat that non-coal region folks call baloney (bologna); Plotskis: potato pancakes; Gid owdda here!!: exclamation of surprise or disbelief; Nuttin: nothing, I ain't do-un nuttin'; Jeezuz, Mary,'n Josuff: multipurpose exclamation, can be used for surprise, anger, frustration, etc.

While I may not be at home in Hazleton to usher in the new year,my thoughts will be there. I have always considered my home to be Hazleton, even though I have lived elsewhere. I graduated from Hazleton State Hospital in 1954. I was at the reunion last year. It was great. I'm not ashamed to let anyone and everyone know that I love my home and I also love the life I have that got started in Hazleton.

There was a yearly Dumchock Family Reunion in Knoebel's Grove this July where 74 relatives attended and had a very special day. It was well worth the two day drive to attend. I have photos taken at Knoebel's in 1940 and was surprised to learn just this year that my mother walked to the park from Sagon when she was a young girl. What a fabulous family park, it too has been "discovered" and therefore very crowded but then nothing stays the same. Will check out this site again, it does bring back some lovely memories.

Comments: From Mt. Carmel. It took some time but I finally managed to read all letters in the guesst book. I did not find any entries from people I know. Anyone out there who climbed the mountain to go swimming at Reichies? Any one who worked aat Shamokin State in the early 50's? I am familiar with the Gap since I had relatives from there. I have many fond memories of the region and I agree that there is no place in the world like coalcountry or coalcrackers. I sstill consider Mt. Carmel hhome and this area a place to eaaarn a living. Keep up the good work with this page.

Comments: I'm from the class of 1982 at CB. I've spoken with a few people who are still around here and we agreed that a combined reunion would be more successful than the single year reunions. If anyone is interested, e-mail me. Thanks. We should try to plan it over a non-religious holiday, like Labor Day or Memorial Day, because a lot of us return home for the holidays and are looking for something to do. The 1982 reunion could include 2 years before and 2 years after. This way, we would get to see a lor more of our old friends. Stay cool, ya'll.
