Comments: Born and raised in Shenandoah,PA at 217 South West St. Graduated from J.W. Cooper in '52. My daughter remembered her "babci" making flitch and asked me if I had the recipe since I had all my mother's old cook books. Couldn't find it so went to the GOOGLE search engine, typed in "flitch candy" and you popped up as #1!. Called my daughter and she signed on and couldn't believe it. She can't wait to make flitch and cabbage and prune pierogies!! Thanks. It's a fun site !!

Comments: I proudly reside in Schuylkill county (& how about it, we all know how to spell it!)I previously lived in Towaco,NJ and moved to this region(rejeen)in 1982.I completed my high school education @ Minersville Area in 1989.I was trying to search for a recipe, alcoholic at that. You would't think it considering I live in Schuylkill.HA HA.I can take all the jokes, since I was born in NJ(the armpit of America or the Garbage state)Anywho, as I was saying, I was seeking a boil-o recipe.I looked on several sites and came across this fantastically accurate web page.I read all the additional links, laughed, and agreed. If anyone has any more boil-o recipes or other ethnic treats, send them my way.Thanks.The only inaccuracy I noted was the one regarding Patches - Blackwood does exist,I live close to the remains and have personally observed the remnants. Not to mention all the dune-buggies,4-wheelers,bikes,trucks,cars,& anything that can make it out there would beg to differ.

Comments: I was born in Shenandoah in 1926 to Joe and Pauline (Skoczynska) Uscilowitz. I moved out to join the Marines in 1942 and have been back only infrequently since. Most of my immediate family have passed or moved away in the years since, but some may still reside there, such as my sister, Helen Sajda, and cousins from the Skoczynska family. If any come across this missive, drop me an e-mail. Historically speaking, I was one of the children who was stricken with spinal meningitis during the epidemic of the early 1930's. Many, many young people in our area were afflicted with the malady. In fact, a huge portion of my second grade class at St. Casimir's contracted the disease. Many died, including one of my sisters. The first president I personally saw was FDR when he visited Shenadoah in the Summer of, I think, 1933, when he came to assess the damage done by the coal companies mining under the town. (The supports gave way and ruptured water mains, killed electric service, etc.) I ran up to FDR's car and just before I got to it, one of the secret service men knocked me on my can! I hope the guests don't mind too much of these old ramblings; I like reading others experiences, myself.

Comments: Moved from Hazleton in '84 to Florida but reside in Matthews, NC for the past 13 years. Originally from St. Clair. Have many fond memories of the Coal Region. My father worked for Reading RR for many years and my mother worked in dress factory in town. No other place has a bar and church on every corner like there is in Schuylkill County. This is a great website for all us old 'crackers' Keep up the good work.

Comments: First off I would like to commend this site for its content. I just love it. Brings back old memories..Dannys Drive In, HiWay Drive In, Knobels Grove Berrys Grove, Whiporwill Fishing Dam, Dutch Kitchen and a host of others just to numerous to mention. Then there is the subject of the two posters prior to this post. The Hauer person claiming to be from Frackville, I don't think so, as I was born and rasied there, and still have many a friend and family there and no one by that name ever lived there from what I can tell. Looked in the phonebook as well. Secondly he really did not say he had anythng against anyone or persons in the region, it was the general shortcommings he though the region had, and three, why is it that spelling and grammar is always a stab to a post someone does not like. Nowhere have I seen anything that required perfect spelling to be used. If so just a quick look at the posts on this board would have to be eliminated due to spelling and pronunciations. He is entitled to his opinion. Me, I love the coal region, and only wish I could get back more often than I do at the present. As for Alabama, been there for a few years, and its really a pretty decent place to lay claim to, but hot and humid as the dickens. Right now I am living in New Orleans, La at least for the next 2 years. Sure wish I had some of Danny's Downtown Drive In's hot sauce right now, or a good cold Ying!

Comments: After viewing the guest book for the last number of years we are all exposed to some unfortunate remarks as well as language. I just read #2258 a former coal cracker who now lives in Alabama(of all places) His feelings certainly show his dislike for all of us from the coal region, Rather than getting upset by his remarks I feel sorry for him, he must of had a very unhappy childhood, and at the same time he did not pay attention to his spelling class while in school (if he went to school). I myself have only excellent memories of the coal region, and visit whenever I can.So hang in there Roy, things are going to get better.

Comments: I for one do not miss the first thing from the coal region. Just perusing some of the posts it seems to me that 99% of the people there yet and 100% that have left are still stuck in a time warp, and wish for their old childhood ways. Just think about the ways you all think it was so great to live as, and the dialect, and then ask yourself now what will it get you, a quart of beer perhaps? SOund like a damned bunch of honkies or yonko's. Can you all say "Time Warp"? The coal region is gone by way of what made it..the dinosaur, and thats be to god for that. No jobs, industry or much of anything except cold weather, and log drives to and from work and un godly weather. Most of the area is nothig but a run down ghetto and situated in the land of taxes. I moved out, and yes, none of you ever miss me I am sure as my attitude was not like this when I did live there (shudder to think I actually lived in Frackville) but the coal region is just not the place to live..or should that be exist. There are just to many other better places in this world that offers more, is not stuck in a time warp and has better conditions for life in general. I left in the early 70's and have yet to be back there, and don't intend to go back ever. My 2 cents worth, on this site and the region that is stuck in a circle going nowhere like a bunch of mules plowing a field...it will never change up there, Rat race, is what it is, same old stuff day in day out, never going anywhere. Only the people who have left the area can say otherwise. Most however would not dare to go against this region as its heritage. Still wondering why I lived there up until I was plenty old enough to leave..must, now I wished I took advantage of every minute I could have moved away from that forsaken countryside.

Comments: Formerly from Tresckow, WHHS - Class of 1966. Merry Christmas to all the Coal Crackers. I wish you all an old fashion Christmas and a....... Silent Night Dinner with; fish shrimp, mushroom soup, pierogies, babalkie, sauerkruat w/ lima beans and all the trimmings. We still put honey on all our foreheads so we'll be sweet all year. We all eat raw garlic dipped honey so we'll be healthy all year. Also no one can get away from the table until everyone is finished eating, if someone does the chickens won't lay eggs. Have a good Christmas Dinner as well; ham, halupki, meatballs, hot sausgae, nut bread, poppy seed bread and all the other good stuff. Please list some of your customs it would interesting to hear which are still being carried on. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to my Coal Regions Kums!
